Philosophy Café – ‘What is it like to be you?’ by Dr. Anna Mudde

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The Café runs each Fall and Winter semester. “What is it like to be you?” Presented by: Dr. Anna Mudde Dr. Mudde is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Campion College at the U of R In this talk I consider the social and political implications of the disagreements we often have with one another about what there is (in the world): disagreements that raise the question “what is it like to be you?” This is a philosophical relative of questions about perception of colours: do you and I see the same thing when we see red? By considering everyday examples, in this talk, I suggest that political or practical disagreements can and should lead us to ask a similar form of question — not primarily about how our eyes and sensory systems work, but about our “ontological presuppositions,” our underlying, implicit, commitments about what there is and what it is like.
