The Department of History would like to invite everyone to our second Colloquium of the Winter 2015 term. “‘Farewell to Cotia’: The English Folk Revival, the ‘Pit Elegy’ and the Nationalization of British Coal, 1947-70.” Presented by: Dr. Julia Mitchell (University College London) By the early 1960s, the coal industry in Britain – nationalized in 1947 – had been all but dismantled, leaving New Leftist aspirations for a socialist democracy in ruins. As miners’ hopes for nationalization faltered in line with a de-industrializing economy, the social and political fallout was expressed compellingly through the English folk revival (c.1945-1970). Everyone is welcome to attend! Refreshments to follow in the third floor lounge, Ad Hum 349.
