Paradise Lost: Public Reading with Dr. Jeanne Shami, Professor Emeritus, Department of English, and others. Members of the community – teachers, students, staff, and interested members of the public – are invited to an “epic” reading of John Milton’s Paradise Lost. While this event has been staged in various venues over the last two decades, this year’s reading will be special in at least two ways. Former University of Regina President and current University of Manitoba President, Dr. David Barnard, will return to reprise his role as Narrator – a part that requires him to perform over the entire course of the 12-hour event. It is in large part due to Dr. Barnard’s active encouragement and participation that this event was launched in its early days, and we appreciate his ongoing enthusiasm for language and for fostering vibrant intellectual communities. This is also the year that our “Satan,” Professor Nick Ruddick of the Department of English, will retire, and it seemed fitting to engage him in one last dramatic encounter before he goes on to other adventures.
