Presented by the Honourable Thomas Cromwell, Supreme Court of Canada Law Day celebrates the signing of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and aims at educating and informing the public about the role and importance of the law and justice system. This presentation will discuss how ensuring appropriate access to legal services is a key component of access to justice. Justice Cromwell will offer some reflections on the current state of access to legal services, the role of the profession in improving it and sketch some promising ideas that could provide better service to more people. I interviewed my dad on video in his final weeks. When I asked about his work and finding meaning through helping others, he responded, “I don’t think you can be focused on, ‘Oh gee, I want to make a difference.’ It has to be spontaneous. If it’s not…there’s some kind of egotistical thing going on. That’s a red flag. You hope you impact people on the deepest level you are capable of at the time. Sometimes you hit it, sometimes you don’t. You’re trying.
