Presented by Marilyn Poitras, Vice President of Indigenous Governance, Institute on Governance The signal from the current federal government regarding Indigenous people is one of relationship building, nation to nation partnerships and work on education and language. Although this may be a new script for the non-Indigenous government, it is not news to Indigenous communities and leadership who have been saying this for several hundred years. Not only is it not new, it is consistent with traditional governance principles within natural laws, spiritual laws and even Indigenous man made laws. This lecture will begin to explore what it could mean to institutionalize traditional principles of Indigenous governance in our modern governance processes.
