Organizing rocks: A study of labour processes and power relations in the mining industry

Join Johan Sandström, professor at Luleå University of Technology, as he discusses research that focuses on the labour process at two mines: The Kirunavaara iron ore mine in Sweden and the McArthur River uranium mine in Saskatchewan. Three questions are posed: (i) what are the interconnected acts of organizing that make up a modern mine’s labour processes (who are involved, what do they do, who do they interact with, how do they enact or ‘define their situation’)?, (ii) how do these interconnected acts of organizing unravel changing power relations in the labour processes?, and (iii) how can the findings from the project help actors involved to better articulate (put into words) their role, situation and possibility to act (discretion) related to the changes in the labour processes?
