From the mid 2000s until 2014, Saskatchewan experienced an oil boom with record numbers of new wells being drilled and the increasing use of ‘unconventional’ extraction techniques. This talk examines the regulatory framework for oil and gas in the province and identifies a trend toward less oversight and industry self-regulation during a time of increased drilling and production activity. Based on interviews with rural landowners, oil workers and regulators, Dr. Emily Eaton outlines the impacts that decreasing regulatory oversight and compliance monitoring is having on rural lands and people. This three-part lecture series examines safety in the oil extraction, transportation, and refinement sectors in Saskatchewan. Speakers provide a critical analysis of environmental, community, and occupational safety across the oil supply chain and identify gaps in the existing regulatory regimes. Parts two and three in the series take place Wednesday, November 25th and Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015.
