Presenter: Narmeen Ramadan, Regina Huda School Abstract: This research is a study of why students continue to attend faith-based schools, specifically an Islamic school in Saskatchewan, Canada. The study was based on interviews of seven participants from the graduating class of 2012, as well as 32 participants from Grades 9-12 who filled out an online survey. In particular, the narratives of seven Grade 12 students are presented in this paper and provide critical perspectives regarding the prospects and challenges of Islamic schooling in Canada. As a Muslim-English teacher and parent of a son who attends an Islamic school, this research is of personal as well as academic interest. Few studies have investigated the social and cultural dimensions of Islamic schools in Saskatchewan Canada and their implication on the Muslim identity as well as the Western society. The findings fills a void in the ethnographic literature by critically exploring Islamic Knowledge and Western Knowledge and finding a link through Western Islamic schools.
