Adapting freely from Carlo Gozzi’s Commedia del’arte classic, The King Stag, director Joey Tremblay and the Theatre Department at the University of Regina will present a spectacular, clown-filled version of the play filled with the all the pageantry and comic gags (lazzi) of the original – with some impish irreverence and mischievous rebellion thrown in. This update of the 18th-century fairy tale should appeal to the fanciful at heart as well as the young in age. The show’s design takes its inspiration from steam punk – a subgenre of science fiction, fantasy literature and art that features steam-powered machinery in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. We are using all the tricks that our fabulous proscenium stage offers – the traps and the ropes!

I interviewed my dad on video in his final weeks. When I asked about his work and finding meaning through helping others, he responded, “I don’t think you can be focused on, ‘Oh gee, I want to make a difference.’ It has to be spontaneous. If it’s not…there’s some kind of egotistical thing going on. That’s a red flag. You hope you impact people on the deepest level you are capable of at the time. Sometimes you hit it, sometimes you don’t. You’re trying.
