On March 10, Governor General’s Award winning playwright Colleen Murphy will be reading from recent dramatic work. Murphy is well known to Regina writers and audiences as an award-winning screenwriter and film maker as well as a former playwright in residence at the University of Regina (2006). As a prolific and widely produced writer both in Canada and abroad, Murphy’s readings from her powerful and sometimes controversial dramatic writing should give audiences a good taste of current work by a writer who brings both heart and humour to the exploration of tough issues and concerns of immediate importance to both society and everyday individuals. A playwright, screenwriter and film maker, Murphy is the author of “Fire-Engine Red”, “All Other Destinations Are Cancelled”, “Down in Adoration Falling”, “Beating Heart Cadaver”, “The Piper”, “The December Man (L’homme de décembre)”, “The Goodnight Bird”, “Armstrong’s War” and “Pig Girl”. Murphy’s award-winning film career began in 1990 with her screenplay “Termini Station”. Her films have included “Putty Worm “, “The Feeler”, “Desire”, “War Holes”, “Girl With Dog” and “Out In the Cold” Currently, Murphy is playwright in residence at Wilfrid Laurier University.

I interviewed my dad on video in his final weeks. When I asked about his work and finding meaning through helping others, he responded, “I don’t think you can be focused on, ‘Oh gee, I want to make a difference.’ It has to be spontaneous. If it’s not…there’s some kind of egotistical thing going on. That’s a red flag. You hope you impact people on the deepest level you are capable of at the time. Sometimes you hit it, sometimes you don’t. You’re trying.
