SUMMER Reading Guide - Children's Literacy Program (Spark)
Organization: Foundations Learning & Skills SaskatchewanCategory: Education / Training / Teaching
Description: Be part of a caring and trained volunteer network that helps children with their reading skills. Our Spark program offers one-to-one reading support for elementary school students in grades 2-4, identified by the school as reading below grade level. The goal of the program is to bring their reading level up to grade level and improve their reading skills and habits. Trained volunteers are matched with students and meet online over Zoom for 30-minute sessions four times a week for four weeks. The weekly schedule is determined by the Reading Guide's availability and the student's availability. Volunteers follow a structured program to help students take the next step from foundational, phonemic awareness, to understanding, comprehensive, and enjoying what they are reading. Spark is a little bit more than just reading practice; volunteers also practice trouble words and build on reading strategies using a variety of games and activities they would enjoy. In 2023, 96% of teachers reported improved reading skills for students involved in Spark, parents have noticed significant positive changes in their children, and students themselves spoke positively about their experiences with Spark and their Reading Guides. If this is something you are interested in, apply today or call us at 306-652-5448. Find our volunteer application process on our website here: foundationslearning.com/volunteer/ Youth Volunteers (grade 10, 11 & 12). We also welcome youth volunteers to participate in the Spark program. If you are interested, please indicate this in your email when you apply.
