Open Minds: Debating Public Issues presents: Advocacy: Risky Business for Nonprofit Corporations? Speaker: Gloria DeSantis, Department of Justice Studies Advocacy is a contested yet enduring concept on the Canadian charitable/nonprofit corporations landscape. Why is it so contested? Why was the term “advocacy chill” coined in Canada and why has it persisted over the past two decades, especially given collective advocacy is a form of public policy participation in democratic countries? This landscape is dominated by a rise in government surveillance, ongoing cyclical government funding cuts, a corresponding increase in charitable/nonprofit sector sense of confusion about “the rules”, and fear. How advocacy is understood, defined, labelled and practiced has morphed and in many instances disguised itself, for the purposes of its very survival. Interestingly, the sector continues to inspire a litany of progressive public policies. More information: http://www.uregina.ca/arts/public-lectures/open-minds.html
