An Evening of French Documentaries

7 p.m. Fransas Quoi?! – 60 min. Fransas quoi?! takes us across Saskatchewan’s canola fields to provide a picture of a community that is fighting against assimilation. Fransaskois is the name that the province’s French-speakers have adopted to identify themselves. And while many people are unaware of the community’s existence, French has been spoken throughout Saskatchewan for a very long time. Today it is still proudly celebrated by those who have the red fleur de lys emblazoned on their heart. 8 p.m. Les héritiers du club, Renée Blanchar (90 min.) Produced by Maryse Chapdelaine at the NFB’s Canadian Francophonie Studio – Acadie with executive producer Dominic Desjardins With citizens increasingly feeling abandoned by politicians, can artists play a role in society? Rooted firmly in the present while drawing lessons from the past, Les héritiers du club reimagines life in a community through a series of collective initiatives. Incorporating various personal stories, the film sketches a complex shared history and explores how memories are passed on. Les héritiers du club blends the Direct Cinema tradition with Super 8 filming as it chronicles a moving quest to open the door to new ways of being together.
