Attempts on Her Life

Attempts on Her Life is an exciting rollercoaster of late 20th-century obsessions that are woven into the fabric of our times. This is especially true for young people who must confront the challenges of ubiquitous pornography and violence in the media, terrorism on our doorstep, and the possibility of danger in every relationship. At the centre of this work is the idea that coherent identity is a myth. It is a meditation in seventeen scenes on a woman, Annie, who may be a terrorist on the run, or an artist who has turned her suicide attempts into her art, or a traveller who has her photo taken by millionaires’ swimming pools and in slums, or a woman whose children have been killed in civil war, or is even a child herself. Crimp’s play is a dramatic prose-poem that suggests the idea of the individual ego is being steadily eroded by mixture of rampant consumerism, global capitalism, and technological advance. The play is the one that will generate engaged discussion. This play contains mature themes.
