Featuring Michael Byers, Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law, University of British Columbia. Canada is the world’s second largest country, and 40 percent of it is Arctic. Yet most Canadians know next to nothing about the Arctic, its environment and peoples. As a result, we ignore some immense challenges, and miss some key opportunities. It is time for Canada to turn northwards and become a great Arctic nation. Michael Byers holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia. He has been a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford University, a Professor of Law at Duke University, and a Visiting Professor at the universities of Cape Town, Tel Aviv, Nord (Norway) and Novosibirsk (Russia). Professor Byers is a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail, National Post and Toronto Star. His most recent book, International Law and the Arctic, won the 2013 Donner Prize for the best public policy book in Canada.
