The Department of History would like to invite everyone to the first Colloquium of Winter 2015! “Douglas versus Manning: The Political and Religious Battle over Medicare in Postwar Canada” Presented by: Dr. Gregory Marchildon This presentation purpose will explore the competing models of universal medicare designed and implemented by the Douglas government of Saskatchewan and the Manning government of Alberta from the late 1940s until the early 1960s. This historical inquiry addresses not only the political ideologies of Tommy Douglas and Ernest Manning but also the nature of their religious beliefs, and the historical connection between religion and political ideology. This allows for a richer evaluation of not only the differences between the policy objectives of each but also the deeper values motivating each to shape the broader direction of the welfare state in Canada. Refreshments to follow in AH 349 (Faculty of Arts Lounge) All are welcome to attend!
