The Living Heritage symposium began in 2015 as a way to showcase and encourage the expression of knowledge, skills and practices of Living Heritage. Living Heritage emphasizes the human experience; it lives in each of us and shapes our sense of identity, belonging and place in the world. The 2016 Living Heritage event will focus on truth & reconciliation through the sharing of stories, and will contribute to building positive relationships between Indigenous people and other Canadians. The event will provide an opportunity for students, members of the general public, public sector employees and academics to learn about and participate actively in reconciliation initiatives through performance art, storytelling and public policy presentations. This event will showcase: • A keynote address by Dr. Shauneen Pete, Executive Lead: Indigenization, University of Regina; • Discussions on connecting through the power of stories; • Presentations from youth regarding truth & reconciliation; • Policy presentations by the Johnson Shoyama Policy Shop; • Interactive Liquid Art project; and, • Dance, music and poetry. When you become detached mentally from yourself and concentrate on helping other people with their difficulties, you will be able to cope with your own more effectively. Somehow, the act of self-giving is a personal power-releasing factor.
