Please join us with our guest Craig Benjamin, Amnesty International’s national campaigner for the human rights of Indigenous Peoples. Craig is touring Saskatchewan in lead up to a national day of action supporting culturally based equity for First Nations children. A recently released UN report examining the human rights situation of indigenous peoples in Canada includes in its findings that: -Initiatives that have been taken at the federal and provincial/territorial levels to address the problems faced by indigenous peoples have been insufficient. -The well-being gap between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people in Canada has not narrowed over the last several years. We will discuss community strategies towards closing this gap so that Aboriginal children are afforded “the same chance that all other Canadians enjoy: to grow up safely at home, get a good education, be healthy, and be proud of their cultures.” -quoted from First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada. This event is supported by Amnesty International, University of Regina Aboriginal Advisory Circle, and the Aboriginal Student Centre.
