The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The series runs each fall and winter semester. We invite you to our first discussion in the Philosophy Café Fall series presented by Dr. Eldon Soifer who is a Professor Philosophy at the U of R. Can we choose our identities? From Caitlyn Jenner to Rachel Dolezal (whose parents claimed she is a white woman passing as black) to “One Armed Jack” and other “transabled” individuals, there have been a number of recent items in the media involving people who have wanted to change how they are perceived by others. Cases such as these highlight issues about the extent to which it is, or should be, open to individuals to choose their own identities. This discussion will explore such questions, including considering under what circumstances, if any, it would be morally wrong for a person to adopt a particular identity. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend!

I was raised to volunteer: nursing homes, clinics, church nurseries, school, everywhere that could use help. It’s such an intrinsic part of me, to use my life to help improve the quality of others.
