The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The series runs each Fall and Winter semester. The Philosophy and Classics Department invites you to our second Philosophy Café discussion of Winter 2016 “The Ethics of Bitcoin: Lessons for Developing Money as a Social Contract” Presented by: Dr. Roger Petry, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Luther College The emergence of Bitcoin foreshadows opportunities for the development of alternative, user driven, non-state currencies. Bitcoin is often maligned for its perceived ethical deficiencies, but what can be learned from Bitcoin for the development of new currencies that allow users to transact at a higher ethical standard? This talk will explore the possibilities of employing electronic currencies as a form of social contract to enable higher market standards. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend!
