Mansel Robinson’s plays include Muskeg & Money, Thea, Bite The Hand, Picking Up Chekhov, Scorched Ice, Street Wheat, Downsizing Democracy, The Heart As It Lived, Collateral Damage and Colonial Tongues. Producing theatres include Théâtre Triangle Vital (Montreal), Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (Sudbury), Théâtre de la Vieille 17 (Ottawa), GCTC, Blyth Theatre, Persephone Theatre, the Globe Theatre, Dancing Sky, Alberta Theatre Projects, Northern Light Theatre and Theatre Network. Mansel has won the City of Regina Writing Award, Geist Magazine’s Award for Distance Writing and the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild Manuscript Award. He is a two-time winner of the John V. Hicks Award, most recently for Two Rooms, which also won the Uprising National Playwriting Competition in Calgary. In 2011 he was a finalist for the prestigious Siminovitch Prize in Playwriting. In 2014 he was one of three playwrights commissioned by the University of Lethbridge in their Fiction at Fifty competition. Mansel has been writer-in-residence at the Berton House in Dawson City, Northern Light Theatre in Edmonton, the University of Windsor, the Regina Public Library and the Surrey Public Library. He is a past-president of the Saskatchewan Playwrights Centre and is member of the Playwrights Guild of Canada and the Writers’ Union of Canada.

I interviewed my dad on video in his final weeks. When I asked about his work and finding meaning through helping others, he responded, “I don’t think you can be focused on, ‘Oh gee, I want to make a difference.’ It has to be spontaneous. If it’s not…there’s some kind of egotistical thing going on. That’s a red flag. You hope you impact people on the deepest level you are capable of at the time. Sometimes you hit it, sometimes you don’t. You’re trying.
