Presenters: Dr. Kathryn Ricketts and Dr. Patrick Lewis, Faculty of Education, University of Regina Abstract: Story, play, and art are often thought of separate concepts and activities. However, the three are actually symbiotically interrelated and we can see the evidence of that in the daily activities of children. Through storytelling with children we can facilitate a story curriculum and play pedagogy that creates a rich supportive environment for children to develop their narrative identities and imaginings. This presentation will also outline a performative approach whereby characters and movement are developed through a 3rd space of creative synthesis with images, words and movement allowing the diversity of the interpreter as the primary focus. Through clear examples we hope to demonstrate the benefits of harnessing cultural difference as a rich source for multiple readings in the development of narratives through and with performance outlining how this process triggers themes and issues that arise in creating a complex and diverse communities of meaning makers.
