Presented Dr. Kimberlyn McGrail, Associate Professor, University of British Columbia Every family physician in Canada is responsible for directing more than $3.3 million in physician, hospital and pharmaceutical spending each year. Not every physician practices the same way, with the implication that some physicians have larger “footprints” in the health care system than others. Research in primary care is starting to reveal differences in patterns of practice and resulting health care spending, with the ultimate objective of identifying associated differences in outcomes for patients. This event is in conjunction with the Western Regional Training Centre on Health Services Research. The WRTC is an innovative and collaborative initiative that supports the training of applied health services researchers across disciplines, sectors, and institutions, equipping them to address the research needs of a wide range of health care policy and decision-makers. The WRTC is based at six universities in western Canada, including the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan.

I interviewed my dad on video in his final weeks. When I asked about his work and finding meaning through helping others, he responded, “I don’t think you can be focused on, ‘Oh gee, I want to make a difference.’ It has to be spontaneous. If it’s not…there’s some kind of egotistical thing going on. That’s a red flag. You hope you impact people on the deepest level you are capable of at the time. Sometimes you hit it, sometimes you don’t. You’re trying.
