Opportunity Description:

The YMCA Plusone Mentoring program is looking for volunteer mentors, just like you!

Plusone Mentoring is a new mentoring program to Regina for youth 10-17 years old who are experiencing challenges in their social and academic development. Youth that are referred to the program are matched with a volunteer mentor based on similar interest and hobbies. The pair meet at the YMCA to participate in sports, leisure and capacity building activities. Mentors receive specialized training prior to engaging with their mentee and the mentoring relationship is guided by a program Support Worker. The objective of the mentoring relationship is for the youth to leverage the new skills, and tools they have developed throughout the year with their mentor to help them navigate the challenges they confront in their daily life.

Plusone Mentoring is unique in that, the youth and mentor meet for a period of one year. For the first 6 months, meetings are 2-3hrs a week and gradually decrease to 2 meetings per month. The relationship is guided by an Action plan, developed by the Youth themselves and sets out goals they want to achieve based on their interests and hobbies. This model of mentoring was developed in 2009 by the YMCA of Scotland and has since been identified as one of the 25 best practices in the United Kingdom for intervening with youth.

Although the word, “Mentor” can be quiet daunting it can be simply put as, enjoying activities that you already do and sharing that experience with a youth. Subsequently, the impact of volunteering to be a mentor for a youth is far more meaningful. When you volunteer you are telling a youth you have made the choice to be in their life and that there is someone in their community that values and cares for them simply by giving them one-to-one attention. As a YMCA Plusone Mentor you will receive a membership to all three facilities at no cost and be a part of a larger community that is dedicated to the values of caring, respect, honesty, responsibility and inclusiveness.
