Presented by Dr. John Church, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Alberta In 1994, Alberta replaced roughly 200 local health care boards with 17 regional health authorities. Over the next 14 years, this “new” Canadian approach to governance and delivery would evolve into an increasingly centralized process of decision-making, culminating in the creation of Alberta Health Services, a single organization responsible for almost all health services in the province. Dr. Church will discuss the policy influences driving this evolution and reflect on the resulting opportunities and challenges.
