The Original Instrument: The Human Voice and the Human Body Bio – As a classically-trained singer, Helen Pridmore’s early performing career focused on the beautiful music of the 18th and 19th centuries – Schubert, Mozart, Puccini. These, her first vocal loves, continue to be sources of inspiration and admiration. They offer a huge range of repertoire and show off the beauty of the human voice. In this talk, Pridmore asks, “But what is beauty anyway? How do we conceive of beauty in art, in music – in our bodies and our voices?” These questions have been at the centre of her research for the past ten years as she continues her exploration of the capabilities of the human voice in scored music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and in extended techniques, improvisation, and performance-based work in various forms. Pridmore will also present some of her work and asks us to consider the question of beauty in our perceptions, our art and our lives.
