The 2014 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture features Dr. Thom Workman from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. His presentation, entitled “The Hedgehog, the Fox and Canadian Austerity” explores how Canadian history has been shaped by international economic crises from the middle of the 19th century down to the present. The global crisis of the early 1970s ushered in neoliberal policy reforms to the detriment of working people across Canada. Early indications are that the lingering crisis of 2008 – the Great Recession – will add immensely to their burdens. It is imperative that issues as seemingly diverse as rising family indebtedness, falling rates of unionization or the gutting of the unemployment insurance regime can be regarded in terms of their shared social and political features, especially their relationship to the crisis-ridden capitalist economy.
