This lecture, which is the first in the University’s “Deliberation and Debate” series, will be delivered by Dr. Marie Battiste, Professor of Educational Foundations at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Battiste will address an issue that is of particular importance to our University: “Decolonizing and Indigenizing the Academy: Toward Cognitive Justice.” In her lecture, Dr. Battiste will draw on treaties, national and international law, the work of other Indigenous scholars, and personal experiences to document the nature of Eurocentric models of education, their devastating impacts on Indigenous knowledge and peoples, and the losses they entail for improved learning for all. She will highlight the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action to Canadian schools and universities for reconciling their programs of cognitive assimilation and injustice, and provide promising practices across Canada for achieving Indigenization and cognitive justice. Dr. Battiste’s lecture will be preceded by a short discussion by Dr. Blair Stonechild, Professor of Indigenous Studies at First Nations University of Canada.

You nourish your soul by fulfilling your destiny, by developing the potential that the soul represents. When you fulfill your soul’s destiny, you will feel “right.” Conversely, when you ignore your soul’s destiny, when you get caught up in your own self-interests and forget to care for others, you will not feel “right.” Instead, you will feel empty and unfulfilled. During these times, you are neglecting your soul–you are depriving it of nourishment. When I talk to people who feel this emptiness and lack of fulfillment, I recommend they find a source of balance in their lives. I suggest they find a way to “give back” to the world in order to feel a sense of completeness.
