The Philosophy Cafe is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. Everyone is welcome to attend! The Philosophy Cafe invites you to our first discussion in the Winter 2014 series: “Truth, BS and Assertion” Presented by: Dr. Ryan Doran, Instructor in Philosophy at the U of R. It’s rare for works of academic philosophy to be read by popular audiences, but Harry Frankfurt’s essay “On BS” spent 27 weeks on the New York Times best seller list in 2005. Despite the popularity of Frankfurt’s essay, Dr. Doran will argue that Frankfurt’s discussion of the topic is problematic in several respects, and that resolving the issues arising from Frankfurt’s account requires considering of the nature of assertion.
