Based in Calgary, Lakra is one of the most interesting up-and-coming playwrights to have burst onto the scene in the past few years. His play, Sequence, won the 2011 Alberta Playwriting Competition Grand Prize, the 2013 Betty Mitchell Award for Outstanding New Play, the 2013 Calgary Critics Award for Best New Script, and the 2013 Woodward/Newman Drama Award. It was a finalist for the 2012 STAGE International Script Competition (Judges included 3 Pulitzer Prize winners and 2 Nobel Prize winners), and is on the short-list for the 2014 Gwen Pharis Ringwood Drama Prize (Writers’ Guild of Alberta) and the long-list for the 2014 James Tait Black Drama Award (University of Edinburgh/National Theatre of Scotland). Having written a book on laser eye surgery, Lakra divides his work time between his ophthalmology practice and his creative endeavours, but he has a range of new creative work in progress-including a supernatural thriller screenplay-so Lakra will bring a lively trans-disciplinary creative perspective to the Reading Series to kick off the 2014-2015 season.
