Cultural Exchange was formed under the old Societies Act in 1977 and delivered its first provincial program in 1980. Called Communicart, the program toured urban artists to rural Saskatchewan hence cultural exchange.
Life for the Cultural Exchange was turbulent in the 80’s and 90’s. Funding was gained and lost, the original facility burned to the ground and a new one was purchased and renovated. Programs were discontinued as funding priorities changed. Cultural Exchange became an incubator mentoring to independence the Saskatchewan Fiddlers Association, CommonWeal Community Arts, and assisting in the growth of the festival industry in the province through Saskatchewan Festival and Events.
In 2009 the Board of the Cultural Exchange revisited its roots and determined that it was not in the best interests of the community to continue in its service role to the festival community. A new vision was developed and a new strategic plan; the heart of which is delivering art programming for the people of Saskatchewan.
Today Cultural Exchange, is an organization grounded in values of inclusivity and openness, that delivers art programs to the people of Saskatchewan in collaboration, as clients, as audience, artists and participants. Cultural Exchange focuses on emerging artists, emerging art practices and developing audiences and clients. Cultural Exchange delivers programs to the people of Saskatchewan and focuses on audiences, clients and participants in marginalized communities and regions.
