The YMCA of Regina and community partners are conducting another Point-in-Time Count of Regina homelessness on the evening of April 18th, 2018, and we in need of many volunteers.
A Point-in-Time Count, or PiT Count as it’s commonly referred to, is the measure of the number of people living homeless, either sleeping rough (streets, parks, etc) or in shelter systems, counted on a specific day and period of time. It is meant to be a snapshot, painting a picture of what homelessness looks like in that time and place. Key data is also collected to determine significant details about those living in homelessness.
The majority of the volunteers will be needed for the Street Count component. In a street count, the city is sectioned off into separate areas identified as hot spots for individuals that may be sleeping rough. A team of volunteers is assigned to an area, where they walk and look to enumerate and survey individuals during the PiT-Count time frame. Before taking to the streets, volunteers will be trained at the Downtown YMCA of Regina location. There will be refreshments and snacks provided for those involved.
Types of positions Needed: Register online at http://www.regina.ymca.ca/2018pit-count
Survey Volunteer: Survey Volunteers survey individuals on the street, at service locations, as well as/or at a magnet event the following day. The count will take place on April 18th, 2018 between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Survey Volunteers are required to commit to a 6 hour shift, which includes survey training.
Survey Volunteers will work in assigned teams under the leadership of someone with experience in the field. Volunteers surveying on the street need to be able to stand and walk for up to 3 hours. Accommodations can be made for volunteers who are unable to meet this criterion.
You will be given a surveyor supply kit. We encourage all volunteers to bring a cellphone.
Team Leaders: Team Leaders carry out all duties listed above, but also take on additional responsibilities regarding the safety and coordination of a team of volunteers. Ideally, Team Leaders should have experience working with individuals that are homeless and/or vulnerable populations. Team leaders will also be trained a few days before the night of the count, and are expected to help train their team of Survey Volunteers before taking the streets on the night of the PiT-Count.
Headquarters Volunteers: Headquarters Volunteers provide administrative support on the night of the count. The responsibilities include registering volunteers, distributing and receiving supplies, maintaining the snack table, delivering materials to Survey Volunteers in the field, and providing general assistance to the PiT Count Coordinator.
