Habitat for Humanity Regina
Regina, Saskatchewan

Habitat for Humanity Canada brings communities together to help families build strength, stability and independence through affordable homeownership.

With the help of volunteers and Habitat homeowners, local Habitats in every province and territory help build and rehabilitate safe, decent and affordable homes, including single-family and multi-unit houses.

Habitat does not give away free homes — the families who partner with us pay an interest-free mortgage geared to their income and volunteer 500 hours with Habitat. As Habitat homeowners pay off their mortgage, the funds are invested into a revolving fund, which is used by their local Habitat to build more homes for low-income families in the community.

Our model of affordable homeownership bridges a gap for low-income working families by providing them with the opportunity to purchase their own Habitat home and build a better life.

Why affordable homeownership?

We know that affordable homeownership plays an absolutely critical role in helping families create a new foundation for a stronger future, one that’s filled with possibilities and progress. Affordable homeownership allows families to foster the skills and confidence they need to invest in themselves and their communities, which has a life-changing impact on their lives.

But the benefits of a Habitat home reach far beyond the four walls volunteers and families raise together. Because Habitat families have reduced reliance on social housing and food banks, better education and employment outcomes, and improved health, every Habitat home built helps create $175,000 worth of benefits for the local community.

HEROS is a mentor-based hockey program that provides free programming to our most vulnerable young people giving them a “team for life”. We celebrate those first tentative steps and their first goal on the ice and provide a safe and stable environment for young people to succeed and connect off the ice. We facilitate mentor relationships between dedicated volunteers and the participants as well as peer mentoring of older participants with their younger counterparts while focusing on four fundamental behaviours: listening, respect, discipline and having fun. HEROS is more than hockey.

HEROS offers three programming streams: Future Stars, All Stars and Super HEROS. Our Future Stars and All Stars programming streams cater to youth who face socio-economic and personal challenges and our Super HEROS programming is designed for youth with cognitive and physical challenges.
