Talking Fresh 12 - Exile: Writing Beyond the Borders (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 7, 2014 - March 7, 2014

When: March 7-8, 2014 Who: Lillian Allen, Colleen Murphy and Armand Ruffo Talking Fresh is a two-day writers' festival that targets Regina and a wider Saskatchewan community including aspiring writers and anyone interested in writers and books. Now in its twelfth year, Talking Fresh tackles the concept of "exile." This year writers and artists explore writing about various aspects of exile, such as writing while exiled, writing about characters that are displaced, exploring novels and screenplays that have been banished and subsequent reactions from the reader/audience/critics. Talking Fresh begins on Friday, March 7 with a panel discussion involving all three writers and Bruce Walsh, and focuses on the theme "Exile: Writing Beyond the Borders." The evening will also feature readings by all three writers as they read selections from their books. On Saturday, March 8 our writers will conduct workshop-style sessions related to their particular perspectives: drama (Murphy), non-fiction and prose (Ruffo) and spoken word (Allen). These presentations will be practical and focus on the craft of writing. They are intended for writers of all levels and the festival is open to the public, as many people will find these sessions interesting and interactive.

Souls Behind the Badge: The Real World of Policing - An Insider's View (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 6, 2014 - March 6, 2014

There's no question that law enforcement officers are under intense scrutiny. In high-profile Canadian cases like Robert Dziekanski and Willie Pickton, police are blamed by a critical public and the media for everything from excessive use of force to allowing criminals to get away with murder. Wayne Ryan, a retired veteran RCMP officer, describes in detail the emotional trauma the job inflicts on those who serve and protect us. Most often, what the public sees of a case is not nearly the whole story. Using personal accounts and the analyses of a seasoned officer, Ryan explains how police officers make their decisions on the job and what it's like to cope with the aftermath. Examining numerous issues including sexual harassment, gender bias, and allegations of misconduct, Ryan speaks frankly about the gritty reality encountered by those in a profession that is often glamorized by the entertainment industry. In his 21 years as an RCMP officer, Ryan worked as a patrol officer, plainclothes detective, and hostage negotiator. He retired at the rank of Sergeant in 1996 after partaking in over 500 major crime investigations. Book sale/signing to follow.

2014 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 12, 2014 - February 12, 2014

The 2014 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture features Dr. Thom Workman from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. His presentation, entitled "The Hedgehog, the Fox and Canadian Austerity" explores how Canadian history has been shaped by international economic crises from the middle of the 19th century down to the present. The global crisis of the early 1970s ushered in neoliberal policy reforms to the detriment of working people across Canada. Early indications are that the lingering crisis of 2008 - the Great Recession - will add immensely to their burdens. It is imperative that issues as seemingly diverse as rising family indebtedness, falling rates of unionization or the gutting of the unemployment insurance regime can be regarded in terms of their shared social and political features, especially their relationship to the crisis-ridden capitalist economy.

Aboriginal Youth Leadership Forum (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 10, 2014 - February 10, 2014

The conference will be the kickoff of The Neekaneewak Leadership Initiative, an Elder based program that enhances cultural awareness and develops Aboriginal student leadership skills through traditional and current "ways of knowing." The intent of this forum is to bring local youth leaders, of both First Nations and Métis ancestry, to the University campus to discuss topics of governance, health, education, activism and self-identity. The idea of having local community members, similar in age, will assist our current students, as well as prospective students, in personal self-exploration. Self-exploration is a key component in developing leadership characteristics in one's self.
