Our Dreams Matter Too: First Nations rights to culturally based equity to education, health and wellbeing (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 28, 2014 - May 28, 2014

Please join us with our guest Craig Benjamin, Amnesty International's national campaigner for the human rights of Indigenous Peoples. Craig is touring Saskatchewan in lead up to a national day of action supporting culturally based equity for First Nations children. A recently released UN report examining the human rights situation of indigenous peoples in Canada includes in its findings that: -Initiatives that have been taken at the federal and provincial/territorial levels to address the problems faced by indigenous peoples have been insufficient. -The well-being gap between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people in Canada has not narrowed over the last several years. We will discuss community strategies towards closing this gap so that Aboriginal children are afforded "the same chance that all other Canadians enjoy: to grow up safely at home, get a good education, be healthy, and be proud of their cultures." -quoted from First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada. This event is supported by Amnesty International, University of Regina Aboriginal Advisory Circle, and the Aboriginal Student Centre.

FIRST LEGO League Information Session (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 22, 2014 - May 22, 2014

The Department of Computer Science is interested in organizing a FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL) in Regina. What is it? A robotics program for 9 to 14 year olds (Grades 4 - 8), which is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills. FLL teams are made up of up to 10 children with at least 1 adult coach. In early Fall, FLL releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Teams participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), all guided by the FLL Core Values. We plan to have a community (unofficial) tournament on the U of R campus in January, 2015. The FLL in Regina will require help from kids, coaches, volunteers, and sponsors. If you may be interested in participating in, or helping to develop, a robotics program for kids in Saskatchewan, please attend the information session. Everyone is welcome! Free parking in "M" areas. Questions? Please e-mail info@cs.uregina.ca

Heavy Trac: Determination of Homicide Rates across the 50 United States (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 22, 2014 - April 22, 2014

Presenter: Jason Parker, PhD candidate - University of Texas at Dallas Murder is fundamentally different from other crime rates by using an approximate factor structure estimated by principal components. Using factor number estimation from Bai and Ng (2002), all state-level crime rate panels (e.g. murder, burglary) in the U.S. are found to have single common factors after serially demeaning. However, cross-sectionally demeaning reveals zero common factors in every panel except murder implying that the national average is an excellent proxy for the common factors apart from murder. Common factor identification developed in Parker and Sul (2013) reveals that the determinants for the murder rate factor are the murder rates of California and Texas. This is taken as evidence that drug-trafficking is the source of cross-sectional dependence of state-level murder rates.

Defense Budgets in the Post-Cold War Era: A Spatial Econometrics Approach (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 17, 2014 - April 17, 2014

Presenter: Mr. Karl Skogstad, PhD. candidate - Queen's University Examines the determinants of national defense budgets in the post-Cold War era using a spatial econometric framework. Using data for 124 countries over a 16 year time period, examines spatial relationships in defense spending to investigate how countries account for the military spending of other countries when setting their budgets. Using specially developed weighting matrices, the regression results indicate that defense budgets are positively spatially correlated. These results provide support for the use of external" factors when examining defense budgets over this time period. The importance of a country's spatial location when setting its budget is further examined through the identification of regions of high and low defense spending.

JSGS/IPHRC Public Workshop - Children as Citizens: The Child Welfare System and Indigenous Peoples (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 16, 2014 - April 16, 2014

Our purpose is to inform the everyday work of policy maker and practitioners to improve the lives of Indigenous children living in Saskatchewan. For decades, First Nations and Métis children have been overrepresented in child welfare systems across Canada. Despite research, reviews, and recommendations, this trend continues. While Indigenous children come into the care of child welfare for a variety of reasons, often the primary reasons are poverty, parental mental health and addictions, and poor housing. Once in care, it is assumed that Indigenous children are in a safer place and their needs are met; however, research indicates that for Indigenous children, being involved with the child welfare system can directly contribute to negative health and social outcomes at an early age and throughout their lifetimes, further creating intergenerational trauma. The session seeks to be provocative and thoughtful, questioning what is taken for granted in our current policies and practices that might be placing Indigenous children at further risk, while creating a respectful environment for questions and dialogue for workshop participants.
