2014 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 12, 2014 - February 12, 2014

The 2014 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture features Dr. Thom Workman from the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. His presentation, entitled "The Hedgehog, the Fox and Canadian Austerity" explores how Canadian history has been shaped by international economic crises from the middle of the 19th century down to the present. The global crisis of the early 1970s ushered in neoliberal policy reforms to the detriment of working people across Canada. Early indications are that the lingering crisis of 2008 - the Great Recession - will add immensely to their burdens. It is imperative that issues as seemingly diverse as rising family indebtedness, falling rates of unionization or the gutting of the unemployment insurance regime can be regarded in terms of their shared social and political features, especially their relationship to the crisis-ridden capitalist economy.

Aboriginal Youth Leadership Forum (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 10, 2014 - February 10, 2014

The conference will be the kickoff of The Neekaneewak Leadership Initiative, an Elder based program that enhances cultural awareness and develops Aboriginal student leadership skills through traditional and current "ways of knowing." The intent of this forum is to bring local youth leaders, of both First Nations and Métis ancestry, to the University campus to discuss topics of governance, health, education, activism and self-identity. The idea of having local community members, similar in age, will assist our current students, as well as prospective students, in personal self-exploration. Self-exploration is a key component in developing leadership characteristics in one's self.

The Triumph of Non-Violence (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 7, 2014 - February 7, 2014

Canadian journalist and author Gwynne Dyer will be speaking on "The Triumph of Non-Violence" at this free public lecture. The Triumph of Non-Violence" is about the revolutions of the "Arab spring" and what they mean for the region and the world, but it also sets them in a broader context. Non-violent revolution is both more common and more successful in the modern world than the old and bloody version, but few people really understand it. This is an attempt to explain how and why it works. Gwynne Dyer has worked as a freelance journalist, columnist, broadcaster and lecturer on international affairs for more than 20 years. Born in Newfoundland, he received degrees from Canadian, American and British universities, finishing with a Ph.D. in Military and Middle Eastern History from the University of London. He served in three navies and held academic appointments at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and Oxford University before launching his twice-weekly column on international affairs, which is published by over 175 papers in some 45 countries.

Faculty of Business Administration Speaker Series (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 7, 2014 - February 7, 2014

Dr. Nourhene Ben Youssef will present "Lie to us: Restatement Announcements" Abstract: Lying, confusing, withholding key information, and/or delaying the release of pertinent explanations are manipulation techniques potentially used by companies to mislead investors. This paper explores whether and why publicly held companies manipulate restatement announcements. Merging accounting literature with Information Manipulation Theory, we developed a disclosure score encompassing the quantity, the quality, the manner and the timing of restatement information released in the Form 8-K and in the press releases (8K_PRs). Based on this score, we found misleading companies tend to do so by withholding critical information (quantity), disclosing inaccurate information (quality) in their 8K_PRs. To understand the reasons companies mislead investors, our findings suggest that some restatement characteristics affect the likelihood of manipulating restatement information in 8K_PRs.

WestGrid 2014 Seminar Series - Case Study: Molecular Modelling Using HPC & Gaussian (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 5, 2014 - February 5, 2014

The WestGrid Seminar Series hosts talks and tutorials on how to use WestGrid and Compute Canada resources. It also showcases examples of research projects that are supported by high performance computing. Sessions range in length from 30 minutes to an hour and are videoconferenced to participating institutions. This case study will discuss how Gaussian software will allow you to study the properties of molecules and their reactions, particularly in conditions which are difficult or impossible to observe experimentally. Gaussian is regularly used by Dr. Gino DiLabio, an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta. LFS Lecture: Proceed Until Apprehended (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 3, 2014 - February 3, 2014

2013-14 Law Foundation Lecture of Saskatchewan is pleased to present "Proceed Until Apprehended" by Karyn McCluskey, Director of the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit. Description: In 2005, Scotland was highlighted by the UN peace monitor as being the most Violent Country in Europe and Glasgow was the most violent city. How do you change a country to recognize that violence had become the norm, compassion fatigue had permeated the media and murders were seen as commonplace and expected? In 2004, Scotland started to look at violence as a disease and to implement a public health approach to reduce violence. This public health campaign was driven primarily by police, but in the intervening decade has gathered professionals and communities across Scotland who are focused on violence prevention. Scotland is now at a 37-year low in relation to violence. Karyn McCluskey has worked for two decades as head of intelligence analysis in the United Kingdom. Originally trained as a nurse, McCluskey holds a BSc and MSc in Psychology and is a fellow by distinction of the Faculty of Public Health.

Please join us on Friday, January 31 at 3:30 p.m. in RC 050 for the first presentation of Winter Term's FAPS by Rachelle Viader Knowles Translocating art practice Rachelle Viader Knowles will present her current research project, On speaking terms: a translocal approach to dialogue-based art, across social and technical networks, which proposes the addition of art practice to the list of disciplines contributing to the growing field of translocality research. In April 2013, she participated in the Mallorca Translocal Meeting, a group art residency and networking event. Organized by Marcos Vidal Font, the MTM brought together a network of organizations from Bulgaria, the UK, Armenia, the Netherlands and Spain, each with a mandate to develop peer-to-peer, artist-run cultural projects that bypass standard art-world hierarchies and emphasize mobility, communications, and cultural exchange. This experience has furthered her understanding of how ideas of translocality are currently being deployed within contemporary art. Rachelle Viader Knowles is an artist, researcher and educator and Head of Visual Arts at the University of Regina.

Specifically designed for 10 to 12 year olds, Soccer's Kool creates an environment where your child is encouraged to develop their fundamental skills using a wide variety of age appropriate games and activities. At Soccer'sKool we believe that praise and the opportunity to try their new found skills in pressure free small sided games (up to 4 vs 4) is the best way to create confident and imaginative players for the future. In addition to thoroughly enjoying their soccer development experience, your child will enhance his/her coordination and ability to move with and without the ball. Your child will think it's cool to be part of Soccer's Kool!
