Gentle Teaching Symposium (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 9, 2014 - April 9, 2014

Gentle Teaching (GT) is a non-aversive approach to supporting marginalized individuals and has been found quite useful to engage people with developmental disabilities and/or those with dual diagnosis (those who have a developmental disability and a mental health diagnosis) in their own lives. GT is based on a psychology of human interdependence. It asks caregivers to look at themselves and their spirit of gentleness to find ways to express warmth and unconditional love toward those who are the most disenfranchised from family and community life. This public lecture invites you to come learn more about the global movement of Gentle Teaching philosophy and practice as it is experienced by four Canadian CBOs from Regina, Saskatoon, Abbotsford BC, and Ottawa ON. Each agency will make a short presentation about how they use GT to support marginalized individuals and why this approach to caregiving works.

WestGrid 2014 Seminar Series - A Signpost on the Road to Exascale (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 26, 2014 - March 26, 2014

The WestGrid Seminar Series hosts talks and tutorials on how to use WestGrid and Compute Canada resources. It also showcases examples of research projects that are supported by high performance computing. Sessions range in length from 30 minutes to an hour and are video-conferenced to participating institutions. This session will discuss how Exascale computing is the next great challenge in supercomputing. Last year, Drs. Humaira Kamal and Alan Wagner, in the Department of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, notched an exciting signpost on the road to exascale when his team executed programs with over 100 Million processes on 6,480 processor cores on WestGrid machines using Fine-Grain MPI. In this talk, they will share details of that experiment as well as highlights from their ongoing work with Fine-Grain MPI.

The Gormley Papers: I'm right and you know it. (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 18, 2014 - March 18, 2014

Public Lecture by political commentator and radio personality John Gormley about changes in Canadian and Saskatchewan politics and culture during the past decade. Gormley discusses the events that take us from the changed world of 9-11 to the culture of protest, juggling modern life between family and technology, aging not so gracefully and the landscapes - personal and political - that fall in between. With a blend of humour and gravity, Gormley examines the first decade of our new century and contemplates where we are headed. A lawyer and Queen's Counsel, Gormley is a former Saskatchewan Member of Parliament and a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. He's been recognized by Saskatchewan Business magazine as one of Saskatchewan's most influential people. He's been a lecturer in political studies at the University of Saskatchewan and is a sought after convention speaker on a range of subjects from politics to pop culture. His first book, Left Out: Saskatchewan's NDP & the Relentless Pursuit of Mediocrity, became a Canadian best seller in its first 40 days in the marketplace, and has sold nearly 10,000 copies.

Is Democracy a Threat to Liberty? (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 18, 2014 - March 18, 2014

A lecture sponsored by the Department of Political Science: Presented by Shadia Drury We live in an age in love with democracy. It is considered the gold standard of political order, rationality, prosperity, and well-being. The trouble is that our love for democracy is replete with confusions and even subterfuge. It is my contention that democracy is beloved because it is either confused with other things, or for nefarious reasons that display the defects inherent in democratic politics. In what follows, I will attempt to untangle democracy from other concepts with which is it often confused-especially political and economic liberalism, and examine at least one nefarious reason that makes it as beloved by North American social conservatives as it is by Muslim extremists. Shadia Drury is Canada Research Chair in Social Justice.
