Natalie MacMaster & Donnell Leahy Present: A Celtic Family Christmas (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: December 5, 2016 - December 5, 2016

This holiday season join Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy, the award-winning fiddle virtuosos, in an intimate and unique Christmas concert series you will never forget. With the duo accompanied by an incredible array of talented session musicians – and their entire family – A Celtic Family Christmas will guide you into the wonderful world of a true Cape Breton Christmas celebration. “This tour is going to have an energy that goes beyond the duration of the show,” says Natalie MacMaster. “I want it to stay with our fans throughout the holidays, and beyond.”
To fans of fiddle music, Natalie MacMaster needs no introduction. Over a recording career now spanning 25 years, this Order of Canada recipient has released 11 albums that have notched sales of over 200,000 copies. She has won two JUNO and eleven East Coast Music Awards and been nominated for a Grammy, and has collaborated with artists as diverse as Yo-Yo Ma (on the Grammy-winning album Songs of Joy & Peace), Alison Krauss, Jesse Cook, and Bela Fleck. Though acknowledging that she can be "a musical chameleon," Natalie stresses that, above all else, "I play Cape Breton fiddle." Donnell Leahy is no stranger to the awards podium himself. He is the oldest brother of the internationally acclaimed family musical group Leahy, winners of three JUNO Awards. Widely recognized as one of the best Celtic fiddlers in the world, his high-energy playing style also makes him a highly popular performer.
The fiddling duo have toured extensively over the years both together and separately, selling out venues across the continent. Each show is an unforgettable experience for all those in attendance, and word of their musical feats has travelled. The last Christmas concert series sold out in a matter of days, leading to additional shows added due to high demand. "If you really love fiddle music, there are performances here that are nothing short of jaw dropping ... performances that will raise you up and performances that will leave you misty–eyed," The Guardian.
This year, A Celtic Family Christmas exceeds all expectations with riveting performances by Natalie, Donnell, and their children, bringing the Cape Breton Christmas to you. Through a mix of both song and dance, they will take you on a journey of virtuoso performances, telling the story of the night before Christmas in the Leahy/Macmaster household. “Christmas is where this whole concept started and we are excited to be travelling as a family,” says Donnell. “It’s a perfect time to travel across Canada and bring light and happiness to families and fans across the country.” With a lineup of familiar Christmas songs intermingled with classic Celtic songs sure to warm your heart, A Celtic Family Christmas brings you in the door, and welcomes you in as part of the family.

In 2006 Montreal Six Flags (La Ronde) said: “REPLAY is as authentic a reproduction of a show by The Beatles as you will see anywhere.”

Charlie Major (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: November 29, 2016 - November 29, 2016

He’s more Mellencamp than Merle. His lyrics champion the ‘Blue Collar Hero’ in a manner that resonates of Springsteen and other roots rock legends, but it is in the country music format that Charlie Major finds his home.
Rising to the forefront of the Canadian Music scenes in the early to mid-nineties, Charlie had a heyday at radio as he became the first Canadian artist in history to score six BDS #1 hits off of his debut album. Nine more chart topping hits would follow, and Charlie would crisscross the world headlining tours and connecting with his fans at fairs and festivals.
But as the old saying goes “fame come with a cost” and it wasn’t long before a major US label signed Charlie, moved him and his family to Nashville. The head of the label told Charlie his sound need to change and become “more country”. The marketing department thought records might sell better in the US if he appeared on the album cover in a Stetson, and added more fiddles and steel guitars to his edgy songs. What the label did not know was that even though Major might sell out concerts, he was not the type of guy who ‘sells out’ his career. Charlie’s integrity to remain true to his fans, himself and his music was immovable and so he relinquished the dream of the big US record deal and returned to his homeland where he continues to be embraced.
Over a decade later Charlie is as successful as ever, he headlines his own tours and pairs up with the likes of ZZ Top to rock arenas full of fans from coast to coast. He has sold nearly half a million records in Canada alone and won 3 Juno Awards and 7 CCMA’s, but you wouldn’t know it to meet him, and he would not tell you. He wears the cloak of humility, just like the hardworking folks that he represents in his music.
Truly a Canadian legend and one of the accomplished ‘nice guys’ in the game, Charlie would not have it any other way.

The Trews Presented by Rawk Entertainment (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: November 24, 2016 - November 24, 2016

The band that would eventually become The Trews was formed in high school in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. In 2002, the band won a rock search contest which would prove to be their big break as they soon landed a recording contract with Sony BMG Canada. The release of their first full-length CD, House of Ill Fame, was released in 2003 and featured the singles “Not Ready to Go”, “Tired of Waiting” and “Fleeting Trust”. “Not Ready to Go” hit #1 on Canadian rock radio and was the most played song of 2004 in that format. The band was nominated as New Group of the Year at the 2004 Juno Awards and “Not Ready to Go” was nominated as Single of the Year in 2005.
They wasted no time piling success on top of success, watching their stature grow with multiple hit singles and an incomparable live show, courting exhaustion while they fanned out across the world.
The tensions were audible on 2008’s No Time for Later. The band’s third album was its most accomplished and satisfying, but emerged uptight and dark. Not insignificantly, the second single was called “Paranoid Freak”. They were offered the Tragically Hip’s fabled Bathouse Recording Studio and a couple months later had a new album – “Hope and Ruin”. If the Trews were tired when they walked into the Bathouse, they were rejuvenated by the time they walked out, having found hope in ruin.
Songs: “Not Ready to Go”, “Tired of Waiting”, “Poor Ol' Broken Hearted Me”, “Hold Me In Your Arms”, “Paranoid Freak”, “Man of Two Minds”, “Fleeting Trust”, “So She's Leaving”, “Yearning” & “Hope and Ruin”.

Howie Mandel with guest (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: November 17, 2016 - November 17, 2016

Howie Mandel has remained a constant force in show business for over 30 years. Mandel is executive producer of many shows through his production company ALEVY PRODUCTIONS, which has produced the series Take It All and Howie Do It for NBC, and Mobbed for FOX, among others. Mandel also serves as one of the judges on NBCs summer hit talent competition series Americas Got Talent alongside Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howard Stern. Previously, Howie received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Host For A Reality or Reality- Competition Program for Deal or No Deal and a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Game Show Host for the syndicated version of the show.
Howies versatile career has encompassed virtually all aspects of the entertainment spectrum, including television, film and stage. From his work on the Emmy-Award winning St. Elsewhere to the international animated childrens series Bobbys World, Howie has become a mainstay of the American comedy scene. In 2009, Howie added another title to his resume, author, when he released his frank, funny, no-holds- barred memoir Heres the Deal: Dont Touch Me. The memoir that revealed his ongoing struggle with OCD and ADHD-and how it has shaped his life and career made the New York Times Bestseller list on its first week and remained on the list for several consecutive weeks.
Howie started his career on a dare in Toronto in 1979 and then one night during a trip to Los Angeles he was at the legendary Comedy Store on amateur night and Howie was coaxed by his friends to get up and try his luck. As fate would have it, there was a producer in the crowd who immediately hired him to appear on the comedy game-show Make Me Laugh. His appearance on the show led to talk show appearances, a stint as Diana Ross opening act and eventually to the television series St. Elsewhere, where Howie spent six seasons as Dr. Wayne Fiscus on the award-winning NBC drama.
Howies Emmy Award-nominated animated children series Bobbys World ran eight seasons on FOX and now appears in syndication six days a week in 65 countries. As the series creator and executive producer, Howie was closely involved in its writing, as well as providing the voice of Bobby, Bobbys dad and other characters. Howie attributes the shows success to drawing the story lines from real life.

Philosophy Café - Deep Disagreement: Can it be Rationally Resolved? by Dr. Paul Simard Smith (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 10, 2016 - November 10, 2016

Deep Disagreement: Can it be Rationally Resolved? Dr. Paul Simard Smith, Sessional Lecturer of Philosophy at the U of R Some disagreements are deep because they are resistant to resolution through reasoned deliberation. One kind of deep disagreement occurs when the parties in the dispute endorse conflicting fundamental epistemic principles. Michael Lynch (2010, 2016) has proposed a procedure called the epistemic method game that can be used to resolve this sort of deep disagreement. Lynch's primary objective is to provide epistemic support for the principles of scientific rationality, including deduction, induction and inference to the best explanation. However, I contend that the epistemic method game leads to broader results. For example, not only does the epistemic method game provide epistemic grounds for the classical principles of scientific rationality, I think it also provides epistemic grounds for the principle that indigenous oral traditions can provide sufficient evidence for claims to aboriginal title. In this talk I characterize some legal and political disagreements over whether indigenous oral traditions can provide sufficient evidence for aboriginal title aboriginal title. Free and all are welcome to attend!

Don't Panic: the rise of ISIS' - A Lecture by Gwynne Dyer (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 10, 2016 - November 10, 2016

The rise of a terrorist "Islamic State" in parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014 and the unbridled cruelty of the ISIS fighters who serve it have frightened a great many people. They have declared a "Caliphate" that claims the loyalty of Muslims everywhere, and comparable Islamist groups are active in almost all other Arab countries. Is Osama bin Laden's dream of a Muslim world united under extremist leadership creeping closer to reality? Probably not, but Islamic State, al-Qaeda, al-Nusra, Boko Haram, al-Shabaab and the rest are revolutionaries with a political programme, not just vicious idiots with guns. Their political programme, for those who do not share their own quite peculiar religious convictions, starts at the implausible and ends up deep into the surreal, but all their actions are calculated to bring the day nearer when that programme will be fulfilled. Bad news for many people in the Middle East if they succeed, but there simply aren't enough people and resources there to make them a global threat. And terrorism is a minor threat elsewhere, unless the potential victims succumb to panic and start doing stupid things themselves. This lecture is an attempt to assess the real level of risk.

She will highlight the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action to Canadian schools and universities for reconciling their programs of cognitive assimilation and injustice, and provide promising practices across Canada for achieving Indigenization and cognitive justice. Spring's Awakening (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 9, 2016 - November 12, 2016

The first production of the Theatre Department's 2016-2017 Season is: Spring's Awakening adapted by Elizabeth Leavitt, Jeremiah Munsey and Kenn McLeod, based on the original by Frank Wedekind. First performed under heavy censorship in Germany in 1906, the play closed after only one night in New York in 1917 amid public outrage and charges of obscenity. The story traces the dawning sexual awareness of a group of teenagers who, in their painfully funny contradictions, are at once too innocent and not remotely innocent at all. The play remains fresh and unsettling even in our own sex-saturated culture. This adaptation retains the era and ideals of the original, and provokes a closer look at how we talk to our children. Spring's Awakening is produced as part of Regina's City Wide German Expressionism Festival, The Caligari Project This play contains mature content/themes.
