Philosophy Café - Deep Disagreement: Can it be Rationally Resolved? by Dr. Paul Simard Smith (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 10, 2016 - November 10, 2016

Deep Disagreement: Can it be Rationally Resolved? Dr. Paul Simard Smith, Sessional Lecturer of Philosophy at the U of R Some disagreements are deep because they are resistant to resolution through reasoned deliberation. One kind of deep disagreement occurs when the parties in the dispute endorse conflicting fundamental epistemic principles. Michael Lynch (2010, 2016) has proposed a procedure called the epistemic method game that can be used to resolve this sort of deep disagreement. Lynch's primary objective is to provide epistemic support for the principles of scientific rationality, including deduction, induction and inference to the best explanation. However, I contend that the epistemic method game leads to broader results. For example, not only does the epistemic method game provide epistemic grounds for the classical principles of scientific rationality, I think it also provides epistemic grounds for the principle that indigenous oral traditions can provide sufficient evidence for claims to aboriginal title. In this talk I characterize some legal and political disagreements over whether indigenous oral traditions can provide sufficient evidence for aboriginal title aboriginal title. Free and all are welcome to attend!

Don't Panic: the rise of ISIS' - A Lecture by Gwynne Dyer (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 10, 2016 - November 10, 2016

The rise of a terrorist "Islamic State" in parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014 and the unbridled cruelty of the ISIS fighters who serve it have frightened a great many people. They have declared a "Caliphate" that claims the loyalty of Muslims everywhere, and comparable Islamist groups are active in almost all other Arab countries. Is Osama bin Laden's dream of a Muslim world united under extremist leadership creeping closer to reality? Probably not, but Islamic State, al-Qaeda, al-Nusra, Boko Haram, al-Shabaab and the rest are revolutionaries with a political programme, not just vicious idiots with guns. Their political programme, for those who do not share their own quite peculiar religious convictions, starts at the implausible and ends up deep into the surreal, but all their actions are calculated to bring the day nearer when that programme will be fulfilled. Bad news for many people in the Middle East if they succeed, but there simply aren't enough people and resources there to make them a global threat. And terrorism is a minor threat elsewhere, unless the potential victims succumb to panic and start doing stupid things themselves. This lecture is an attempt to assess the real level of risk.

She will highlight the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action to Canadian schools and universities for reconciling their programs of cognitive assimilation and injustice, and provide promising practices across Canada for achieving Indigenization and cognitive justice. Spring's Awakening (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 9, 2016 - November 12, 2016

The first production of the Theatre Department's 2016-2017 Season is: Spring's Awakening adapted by Elizabeth Leavitt, Jeremiah Munsey and Kenn McLeod, based on the original by Frank Wedekind. First performed under heavy censorship in Germany in 1906, the play closed after only one night in New York in 1917 amid public outrage and charges of obscenity. The story traces the dawning sexual awareness of a group of teenagers who, in their painfully funny contradictions, are at once too innocent and not remotely innocent at all. The play remains fresh and unsettling even in our own sex-saturated culture. This adaptation retains the era and ideals of the original, and provokes a closer look at how we talk to our children. Spring's Awakening is produced as part of Regina's City Wide German Expressionism Festival, The Caligari Project This play contains mature content/themes.

Queen City Kids and Harlequin (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: November 4, 2016 - November 4, 2016

Queen City Kids – It was DECEMBER 1969, The Queen City Kids; John Donnelly, Kevin Fyhn, Alex Chuaqui, Jeff Germain and their good friend Rocky Stewart got together in John’s parents’ basement for their first rehearsal ever and history was made. At all of twelve years old, (actually Kevin was still eleven), they didn’t know much about rock n’ roll yet. Except that they liked it and that it was more fun than school.
It was arranged for the first album to be recorded at Century 21 studios in Winnipeg. Most of the songs for the album had been performed and honed to a sheen on the road so there was not much to do except go in and record them. It was a bit of an eye-opener though as the Kids discovered how different it was to play in the studio. Now the emphasis was on technique, not just the raw energy that was the trademark of their live shows. But under the kind wing of Gene the band put out a very interesting album with a lot of diverse sounds and styles. It was a little hard to categorize the band. But the fans didn’t mind and they bought it up quickly in the markets that the band had played heavily. The album went to number one in Regina and Winnipeg. And very quickly was certified gold
In October 2007 QCK was inducted into the Western Canada Music Hall of Fame. The guys were honored by their peers and humbled by being included with the likes of Streetheart, Loverboy and Harlequin, as well as cultural legend Buffy St. Marie. Now in their 40th year of operation the Kids are still out there rocking from time to time at special events and festivals. Watch this site for updates and news of gigs, recordings, and happenings. Who knows how long the kids will be kids? They don’t seem to show any signs of wanting to grow up just yet.
Harlequin - Harlequin was originally formed in the mid-seventies. The band proceeded to amaze everyone by pushing the first release Victim of a Song (1979) to gold status through sheer hard work, incessant touring, word of mouth and solid song-writing. Songs like “Sweet Things In Life”, “You Are The Light” and “Survive” introduced the band to radio in many markets in Canada – especially Western Canada.
The second release, Love Crimes (1980), came with a bigger push from the label, and went on to go Platinum, powered in part by Harlequin’s biggest hit to date “Innocence”. Another track, “Thinking Of You”, became a staple of rock radio and a highlight of the live show. One False Move (1982) cemented the band’s radio success with tunes like “I Did It For Love,” “Superstitious Feeling” and “Heart Gone Cold.” The fourth and final album, eponymously titled, featured a change of direction as well as producer – Alfie Agius, former bassist with The Fixx, replaced Jack Douglas. This album produced one single “Take This Heart” and the bands only video, filmed at the abandoned Don jail in Toronto by Juno-winning Champagne Productions.

Department of History: Marking the 150th Anniversary of Confederation (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 4, 2016 - November 4, 2016

Moral Perspectives on Constitutional Reform: Reflections on the November 1981 Constitutional Accord Between Canada and Nine Provinces on its 35th Anniversary. There can be no doubt that moral conceptions of the good and just state are at play in constitutional negotiations, but it is a process conducted by persons in favoured positions pursuing limited interests and ignoring others. The Accord that led to the patriation of the Canadian Constitution in 1982 represents both important national gains and significant losses for valuable perspectives. In this, as in history generally, there is plenty of scope for judging our political past. John Whyte is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Politics and International Studies. He was the Director of Constitutional Law in the Government of Saskatchewan during the Constitutional patriation process and is one of Canada's leading Constitutional scholars. Dates: November 4, 2016 - November 4, 2016

Featuring Michael Byers, Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law, University of British Columbia. Canada is the world's second largest country, and 40 percent of it is Arctic. It is time for Canada to turn northwards and become a great Arctic nation. Michael Byers holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia. He has been a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford University, a Professor of Law at Duke University, and a Visiting Professor at the universities of Cape Town, Tel Aviv, Nord (Norway) and Novosibirsk (Russia). Professor Byers is a regular contributor to the Globe and Mail, National Post and Toronto Star. His most recent book, International Law and the Arctic, won the 2013 Donner Prize for the best public policy book in Canada. Steve Earle & The Dukes 30th Anniversary Of Guitar Town Performed In Its Entirety (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: November 3, 2016 - November 3, 2016

Throughout his more than 3—year career, Earle has mined the rich veins of American roots music from country to rock and roll, folk and rockabilly. On his 16th studio album of his singular career, Terraplane, Earle pays tribute to the blues, influenced by the blues giants he saw growing up in Texas – Lightnin’ Hopkins, Freddy King, Johnny Winter, Jimmie and Steve Ray Vaughan, Canned Heat and Billy Gibbons. Recorded in Nashville by Ray Kennedy and produced by R.S. Field, the new collection is his homage to the music that he calls “the commonest of human experience, perhaps the only thing that we all truly share” and a record he has wanted to make for a long time.

Over 11 original tracks, Earle and his band The Dukes traverse various forms of the blues – from the Texas roadhouse blues of opener “Baby Baby Baby (Baby)” to the acoustic country blues of “Aint Nobody’s Daddy Now” and the Chicago blues of “The Usual Time” to the pre-war blues of “Baby’s Just As Mean As Me,” a duet with Eleanor Whitmore. The electrified “King of the Blues” features some scorning guitar playing from guitarist Chris Masterson and on “The Tennessee Kid” Earle sounds like a possessed street preached as he retells the Faustian crossroads legend over a John Lee Hooker-esque boogie

While in Regina, Egoyan will deliver a Master Class; engage in conversation with Toronto-based critic Noah Richler on the film Krapp's Last Tape (2001); introduce the film The Colour of Pomegranates (Sergei Parajanov, 1969); and speak on the symposium panel Atom Egoyan: Steenbeckett with international scholars, curators and critics who will contribute to the forthcoming catalogue (London, UK: Black Dog, 2017). Citizen Energy': Social Innovation, Public Policy, and the German Energy Transformation (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 2, 2016 - November 2, 2016

Presented by Dr. Brett Fairbairn, Professor and Graduate Chair, JSGS and Fellow, Centre for the Study of Co-operatives Germany's "Energy Transformation" (Energiewende) is becoming well-known. Germany has increased renewable energy to more than 27% of consumption, and aims for 80% by 2050. Less well-known is the role of community-level social entrepreneurship and innovation in achieving these targets. This presentation considers what we can learn from nearly 900 citizen energy co-operatives incorporated in Germany in less than a decade. How do theories of innovation need to expand to reflect the new dynamics of an age of sustainability? Dr. Brett Fairbairn is a professor in governance and leadership at the JSGS and is based at the University of Saskatchewan. His research and teaching include the history and interdisciplinary study of democracy, social movements, and co-operative enterprises in Canada and around the world. He has more than one hundred popular and academic publications, including his most recent book, Co-operative Canada: Empowering Communities and Sustainable Businesses. Brett is a past recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, the Rhodes Scholarship, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal recognizing his academic and public contributions to Saskatchewan. Dreams – The Ultimate Tribute to Fleetwood Mac (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 28, 2016 - October 28, 2016

From the music to the costumes, Dreams portrays Fleetwood Mac with incredible authenticity. This is definitely a show you won’t want to miss. Formed in 2005, this group of talented, diverse performers came together with a passion for the music, and a desire to take the 'Tribute Act' genre to another level. When you sit back and reminisce about the 70's & 80's music, one of the top bands to grace the charts was Fleetwood Mac. Even today, 30 plus years later, you can still here their music on the radio stations around the world. It was with that thought in mind that Dreams was born. Together Stevie (Tracy Masson), Lindsey (Mario Parente), Christine (Wendy Gorrie), Mick (Todd McGarvey), John (Ray Doucet), are “The Mac Pac”. The fab five are joined by the talents of Stephen Manning (Rhythm Guitar) and Bob Van Velzen (Keyboards), completing this grand seven piece live production. The cast of Dreams takes great pride being able to replicate the Fleetwood Mac sound so closely that it’s difficult to tell the difference. Get going and get grooving to Dreams!

In April 2016 she took over as host of Country Gold, a four-hour Classic Country radio show that airs on more than 100 stations across the US. The show is a music-intensive, fan-interactive program with guest artists and country music’s best music from the past.

In September 2016, Terri will kick off the “Back to My Roots Solo Acoustic Tour”. The 40-city tour will traverse Canada, starting in Prince Edward Island and wrap up in British Columbia in November. Fans will experience Terri’s catalog of hits in a stripped down setting and will hear the stories behind the songs.

The Centre for the Study of Democratic Citizenship and the Research Chair in Electoral Studies at the Université de Montréal will be hosting a public forum on the Canadian electoral reform. The forum will be hosted in Regina via livestream by the JSGS and University of Regina's Department of Politics and International Studies. In-room and remote audience members will be invited to ask questions through the use of the mobile platform Pigeonhole Live. A link will be given to audience members at the forum. Mkrtich Tonoyan: Forays in Military Art (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 17, 2016 - October 17, 2016

Forays in Military Art entails exhibitions by Armenia-based installation artist Mkrtich Tonoyan, whose practice involves activist research in international human rights. It is Station 7 on the larger projects Meet in the Middle: Stations of Migration and Memory Between Art and Film (2014-2017) and the MITM International Symposium (MacKenzie Art Gallery, November 2-5, 2016). MITM is a series of exhibitions on the pressing theme of migration and memory, with a special focus on creating a dialogue between Saskatchewan and Armenia, two relatively isolated geographic areas with shared histories of genocidal trauma. After serving in the Nagorno-Karabakh war, Tonoyan studied at Yerevan's Academy of Fine Arts and became Director of the Armenian Art Centre of Social Studies and President of the AKOS Cultural NGO, working to advance transnational exchange through the power of the arts. Exhibitions include: Camouflage, in which tactical material designed for concealment in battle is sculpturally transformed into an organic mass, memorializing soldiers' trauma in the gallery space. Roll Call, a site-specific work by an Armenian brother-in-arms commemorating fallen Canadian soldiers, as Tonoyan reads the names of 15,000 Canadians killed in historical battles, from conflicts in 1885, World War I and II, to Afghanistan and other peacekeeping missions.
