Category: Live Music
Dates: October 11, 2016 - October 11, 2016

Throughout the course of his three-decade career and 16 albums, Ziggy has built a music legacy worthy of his legendary family name. With seven GRAMMY Awards and an EMMY to his credit, the humanitarian, singer, songwriter, and producer continually progresses at every turn. Ziggy’s musical history dates back to ten-years old when he would watch his father Bob Marley record in the studio. His eight-album catalog with the Melody Makers encompasses three GRAMMY Awards, countless sold out shows, and anthems including “Look Who’s Dancing,” “Tomorrow People,” and “Conscious Party”. Since making his solo debut in 2003, he received the GRAMMY Award for “Best Reggae Album” in 2006, 2012, and 2015 in addition to the Award for “Best Children’s Album” in 20101 recognizing his first children’s album Family Time. That same year, he released his graphic novel debut, MARIJUANAMAN. In 2012, he launched Ziggy Marley Organics, which quickly became a leader in GMO-free coconut oils and hemp seed snacks. 2013 saw him achieve a Daytime EMMY Award for “I Love You Too” and release a children’s book of the same name.
As he embarks on a world tour in support of Ziggy Marley, he brings his message directly to the people. “Everything happens when it’s meant to happen,” he leaves off. “That’s how my career has been since the beginning. Each project is inspired. There are metaphysical and universal things at work in all of our lives. It’s natural and organic. This album is another one of those moments. The message came to me. It’s here at the right time, and I’m ready to share it.

I Mother Earth with Edwin and The Standstills (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 8, 2016 - October 8, 2016

On Friday, June 3, The Phoenix Concert Theatre will play host to the first appearance by I Mother Earth with original vocalist Edwin after more than 18 years. The band will perform their critically acclaimed 3X Platinum album Scenery and Fish in its entirety as well as other fan favourites.
IME certainly has no shortage of concepts or desire to commemorate 20 Years of Scenery and Fish throughout the remainder of 2016. Festival appearances, special releases, and “Evening with” style performances featuring Edwin are all important for the band to pursue throughout the remainder of the year. Scenery and Fish was a benchmark release for IME. The album spawned 4 Top 10 Hits in Canada with “Raspberry”, “Another Sunday”, “Used to be Alright”, and “One More Astronaut”, It also gained traction around the world Cracking the Top 20 on the US Billboard charts and launched the bands touring schedule throughout North America and Europe. Recorded at the Legendary Le Studio in Quebec and Co-Produced by Paul Northfield of RUSH fame, Scenery and Fish is a deep and diverse release that really solidified the lasting relationship with the fans and the band. Yes the success of the singles was great for their growth but the depth of the band on tracks like “Earth Sky and C”, or “Shortcut to Moncton”, or the special appearance by Alex Lifeson of RUSH on “LIKE a GIRL” or even staying true to their own unique heavy dynamic sound with “Pisser” and “Songburst and Delirium” is what deepened the love affair. Now, 20 Years later that feeling can be revisited by both fans and the band.
“We really wanted Edwin involved in revisiting Scenery and Fish this year, and we knew that some of the ideas we had would naturally benefit from having input from the people who were involved in our world at that specific time,” says band co-founder and guitarist Jag Tanna. “I initially reached out to Edwin just to see if he had any interest in being involved in a ‘Making Of...’ documentary. Well, the concept grew and here we are. This is really special for us. We haven’t performed together in 18 years, so this will be fun for the fans that have supported us since the beginning “

The Proclaimers (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 6, 2016 - October 6, 2016

After completing a 2-year World tour late in 2013, Craig and Charlie took 2014 off to focus entirely on writing a new album. They headed to Rockfield Studios in December with their band and producer Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers, Wilko Johnson & Roger Daltrey, Idlewild, The Who) and recorded their 10 th studio album for release on Cooking Vinyl in April this year.
The Proclaimers return to the road and will be touring in 2015 from May through to December.
April 2013 saw The Proclaimers out on a three week USA acoustic tour before joining up with their live band for a host of UK festivals and concerts over the summer including their fifth Glastonbury appearance, Cornbury, T In The Park, Camp Bestival and a Canadian tour in August. The Proclaimers returned for more UK dates and their final concert this year as the first Scottish band to play at the newly opened Hydro Arena in Glasgow in early October.
Strikingly individual, twin brothers Craig and Charlie Reid have over the years enjoyed huge success across the globe as the emotional honesty, political fire, wit and sing-along raucousness of their songs and their extensive touring has enlightened and entertained fans new and old. The Proclaimers have carved out a niche for themselves in the netherworld where pop, folk, new wave and punk collide. In the process they have enjoyed Gold and Platinum singles and albums in UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Philosophy Café - Reason, Religion and Freedom of Speech: Socrates & Antigone as Democratic Heroes? (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 6, 2016 - October 6, 2016

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Professor or a Graduate Student that runs each fall and winter semester. Reason, Religion and Freedom of Speech: Socrates and Antigone as Democratic Heroes? Dr. Ann Ward, Associate Professor of Philosophy and Political Science at the University of Regina Plato's Socrates and Sophocles' Antigone are often seen as models of free inquiry and action in the face of unjust political power. In the Apology of Socrates, Socrates argues that he spent his life questioning the authoritative opinions that supported the laws of Athens. Socrates' philosophic life resulted in his trial for not believing in the city's gods and corrupting the young. He is found guilty and condemned to death, a death which Socrates' accepts rather than cease his unique way of speaking. In Sophocles' Antigone, Antigone defies Creon's decree to leave her brother Polynices unburied, accepting the penalty of death for her actions. Before being buried alive she speaks against Creon's tyrannical rule of Thebes, claiming that she gives voice to a citizenry too afraid to critique their ruler. Although both Socrates and Antigone can be viewed as ancient precursors to the democratic defence of freedom of speech and conscience, this paper will also explore important ways in which they differ. Whereas Antigone puts loyalty to family and divine law above human law, Socrates acknowledges that he has not cared for the things of his family and, despite characterizing himself as a gift of the god to the city, gains a rational self-knowledge that can put military necessity ahead of the desire to give the dead a proper burial, coming to light in his defense of the generals of the Battle of Arginusae. This paper will thus conclude that Antigone would be one of Socrates' accusers rather than defenders.

Prozzäk (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 22, 2016 - September 22, 2016

When animated band Prozzak arrived on the scene in 1998, a Canadian musical phenomenon was born .The duo of Simon and Milo were the brainchild of creators Jay Levine and James Bryan McCollum, two members of the critically acclaimed multi-platinum act The Philosopher Kings. Their debut album, “Hotshow”(Sony) followed Simon’s search for love around the globe, set to infectious dance/pop songs .It was a commercial and critical blockbuster, going multiplatinum, producing chart topping videos, including 2 Muchmusic number ones (“Sucks to be you”, and “Strange Disease”), as well as being nominated for 5 Juno awards. Prozzak also made an impact internationally, in the US, where the video for “Sucks to be you” charted on MTV2, and had top 40 hits in Spain (“Hotshow”), and Turkey (“Strange Disease”).
In 2000, Prozzak released their second album, “Saturday People”, which also went platinum and was nominated for a Juno award for best pop album. The duo performed on the Juno awards that year, reaching over a million viewers. They also embarked on a national arena headlining tour that year.
Jay and James then took a few years to focus on production work including Fefe Dobson’s platinum debut album(Island/Universal). in 2005 Prozzak released their third album “Cruel Cruel World”, before Jay and James devoted their time to individual projects. James went on to co-write and produce hits for Divine Brown("Old School Love") and Nelly Furtado's Spanish album, Mi Plan which won a 2011 Latin Grammy". Jay moved to New York and then LA to pursue his career as a music executive, while James spent the next 5 years in London, UK,writing and recording with James Blunt, Jessie J, Yuna, Olly Murs and more.
In the summer of 2015, Prozzak performed a sold-out reunion show at the Atomic Lollipop festival in Toronto and the overwhelming fun of the experience inspired Jay and James to “get the band back together”. A new single, "Baby I Need Your Love(Pussy Cat), was premiered on CBC in the fall, and the duo have been working on their new album since then. Summer 2016 finds the duo performing at festivals from NXNE in Toronto to Rifflandia in Victoria, BC, with more touring planned for 2017 once the album is released. Prozzak is back!

JSGS Public Lecture -The 2016 American Election: Is this any way for a democracy to choose a leader? (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 21, 2016 - September 21, 2016

Presented by Dr. Paul Finkelman, Ariel F. Sallows Visiting Professor of Human Rights, University of Saskatchewan In this lecture, Dr. Finkelman will examine the American primary process; the evolution of the two party system, and how the electoral college works. It will be part current events, part constitutional law, and part political history. Dr. Finkleman will discuss how the American system of choosing a president is broken, dysfunctional, and in the end anti-democratic. He will explain how the "electoral college" which actually elects the president, is a vestige of slavery that currently suppresses voter turnout and can lead to undemocratic outcomes, such as the person with the most votes not being elected president. To close, he will draw some parallels to the way Canada chooses its prime ministers. An Evening with the Legendary Ian Tyson (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 13, 2016 - September 13, 2016

Ian Tyson is 82 now. And he’s still going strong. Still touring. Still running the Tyson ranch south of Calgary. Still watching the West as he’s seen it change — and not always for the better. Still writing about love, horses, and the country and sky he loves. And he’s still facing the future with a mixture of optimism and resignation.
You can hear all of that in Carnero Vaquero, his 13th album for Edmonton-based roots music label Stony Plain. These are ten songs that ring as true as the western sky and the foothills of the Rockies. The title? “Carnero” is the Spanish word for ram, and “Vaquero” is Spanish for cowboy, and, indeed, the cowboy tradition, particularly in the south-western United States.
Recorded in the Stone House, just down the gravel road from his ranch house, there’s an intimacy and warmth that draws you into his life… It’s the place where Tyson writes his songs, practices guitar, and reads his library of western histories and the early books of Will James.
Your eighties, Tyson tells people, is not a time for sissies. Age is one thing, but the changing West is another, and since Tyson moved to Alberta forty years ago he’s seen way more changes than he’s comfortable with. But the sky and the mountains keep him there, and his alternating regrets and optimism spark his songwriting.
Carnero Vaquero is a special Ian Tyson record. There are half a dozen new songs — as good and better as dozens crafted in the Stone House. There are also two co-writes with a younger, alternative songwriter out of Calgary, Kris Demeanor, and another collaboration with Tom Russell (they co-wrote “Navajo Rug,” one of Tyson’s biggest hits). The opening song, “Doney Gal,” is a traditional song that probably goes back to the earliest days of discovering the West, and he reprises “Darcy Farrow” from one of his earliest Ian & Sylvia records.
Tyson’s smooth relaxed voice has been part of the musical landscape since the early 60s, when — with his then-wife Sylvia Tyson — he conquered the folk boom of the day. Hits kept coming — “Four Strong Winds,” “Someday Soon,” “Summer Wages” and more. A move to Alberta, a hiatus from the music business, and a reluctant return that earned his first platinum record for Cowboyography led to a storied career as North America’s preeminent western singer.

Roseanne Barr with guest (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 10, 2016 - September 10, 2016

Comedy superstar, award-winning actress, best-selling author, 2012 presidential candidate and the original domestic goddess Roseanne Barr continues to amaze. After 9 years, 224 episodes, 4 Emmy awards, and countless other accolades, you couldn't blame Roseanne if she wanted to quietly slip away, able to take solace in the fact she single-handedly re-landscaped the medium of situational comedy forever. The NY Times said that “her greatest asset is her gravitational pull, a force that enchants while holding things, and people, at a comfortable distance. It is the power of a whole planet, pulling everything around it inexorably into its orbit.”
Her creation and stark portrayal of "Roseanne Conner" and the Conner family on ABC's Roseanne has been hailed as "the most ground breaking kitchen-sink sitcom since All in the Family, (Entertainment Weekly)" adding, "she's the funniest disturber of peace that we have." She began her career as a stand-up comedian, turning her experiences as a wife and mother into a hilarious comedy act that audiences couldn't resist. She subsequently produced and starred on her own hit sitcom, "Roseanne," which ran for nine seasons and averaged a staggering 30 million viewers each week. The role earned Barr an Emmy Award as well as Golden Globe, the prestigious Peabody Award, Kids' Choice and multiple American Comedy Awards.
Barr also had her own talk show, "The Roseanne Show," which earned her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination as outstanding talk show host. Her big screen credits include "She Devil," "Freddy's Dead," "Blue in the Face" and "Meet Wally Sparks," and she also voiced characters in "Look Who's Talking Too" and "Home on the Range." She has written three books: "Roseanne: My Life as a Woman," "My Lives" and most recently, "Roseannearchy: Dispatches from the Nut Farm." The Lifetime series "Roseanne's Nuts," which she also executive-produced, followed Barr as she ran a nut farm in Hawaii.
In 2014, Roseanne became the center judge on NBC’s long running series “Last Comic Standing”, produced by Wanda Sykes. Roseanne is also the subject of a new Sundance Films documentary that chronicles her 2012 presidential campaign. The film - ROSEANNE FOR PRESIDENT! - was directed by longtime Michael Moore collaborator Eric Weinrib and says big things about how the system works by highlighting how it doesn't and poking vicious fun at big party politics along the way.
At Full Moon and High Tide Studio (FMHT), Barr's family-run production company, she is currently spearheading numerous projects. The studio produced her first DVD for children, titled "Rockin' with Roseanne: Calling All Kids!" which was inspired by Barr's grandchildren. FMHT has produced original programming for VH1, Discovery ID, and also produced her 4th HBO comedy special "Roseanne Barr: Blonde and Bitchin'" as well as numerous videos for Roseanne’s YouTube channel.
A titan in the world of stand-up comedy, Roseanne returned to her love for live performance, touring select cities around the country. In addition to making people laugh, Roseanne continues to be "a voice for the voiceless”. Whether it is fighting the BDS movement in Israel, thwarting GMO efforts on the Big Island in Hawaii, aiding the Native American families of Pine Ridge, or advocating for the legalization of marijuana, Roseanne’s activism is unwavering.

An Evening with David Crosby (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 9, 2016 - September 9, 2016

Legendary singer-songwriter and social justice activist David Crosby is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, inducted as a member of both the iconic folk-rock band The Byrds — with whom he first rose to stardom — and the iconic Woodstock era-defining group Crosby, Stills & Nash.
A native Californian-and son of an Academy Award-winning cinematographer-Crosby originally intended to be an actor when he moved from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles in 1960. Music prevailed, however, and Crosby began his career as a folksinger, playing clubs and coffeehouses nationwide. Back in L.A. in '63, Crosby formed The Byrds with Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke, winning widespread recognition for his songwriting and charismatic presence. Driven by hits including "Eight Miles High," "Turn! Turn! Turn!," and a cover of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man," The Byrds' signature electric folk-rock influenced countless musicians to come.

Billy Bob Thornton and The Boxmasters (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 6, 2016 - September 6, 2016

Teddy Andreadis, J.D. Andrew and Billy Bob “Bud” Thornton make up “The Boxmasters”; an American roots-rock band of seasoned musicians whose sound is rich in rhythm and story. Formed in 2007, the band released the self-titled debut record “The Boxmasters” to critical acclaim. This two-CD set was comprised of original songs – including the Americana Radio hit “The Poor House” – and eclectic covers of tunes by The Beatles, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Mott The Hoople and Mel Tillis.
After touring the country in 2008, The Boxmasters released a Christmas album – “Christmas Cheer” – and by April of 2009 had released their third album – “Modbilly” (a term that they coined as their style of music which was influenced by 60’s British mod music and influences from Southern American music, both pop and country)– which was yet another double album that spun to the top of the Americana charts for two weeks. “Modbilly” later was ranked #14 on the 2009 Americana Music Association’s Top 100 Albums of The Year.
In 2015, The Boxmasters returned to the road for 2 tours across the U.S. and released both “Somewhere Down The Road” – another double album that was named to Rolling Stone’s “30 Best Country Records You Probably Haven’t Heard” – as well as “Providence” which was a www.theBoxmasters.com exclusive.
The Boxmasters are back with a new album – “Boys And Girls…And The World” – slated for release in the Summer of 2016 on NDR Records, along with another aggressive tour schedule that kicks off in August in Texas, winds through The South and Midwest before heading North of the border into Western Canada and ending back up on the West Coast.

Chris Isaak: First Comes The Night Tour (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: August 30, 2016 - August 30, 2016

For Chris Isaak, first comes the song.

And for First Comes The Night -- Isaak’s stunning first album of new material in six years -- this gifted singer-songwriter and bandleader is bringing us a bumper crop of strong and intriguing songs from which to choose. “There was no mission for this album other than to follow the songs,” Chris Isaak explains, and in terms of songwriting, the floodgates really opened this time. “My last release was Beyond The Sun -- my tribute to Sun Records with a lot of covers -- so this time around I had a lot of new material that I was thrilled to record. My manager always tells me, `We need more songs.’ This time, even she realized she’s creating a songwriting monster, and had to beg me to stop.”

First Comes The Night fittingly represents a number of firsts for Chris Isaak, who recently signed on to become a judge for the first time on The X Factor Australia. Of his new television gig Down Under, Isaak explains, “I love Australia, and if you’re going to look for stars, I can’t think of a more beautiful place on Earth to start looking.” As for First Comes The Night, this is the first time that Isaak has written and recorded so much in Nashville, Tennessee, a change in location he explored partly upon the suggestion of his friend Stevie Nicks. ”Somehow even I had some misconceptions about Nashville,” confesses Isaak. “You’d think a music guy who’s been in the business as long as I have would know better. I’m a huge fan of country music since I grew up listening to Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb and Buck Owens, and I know my country history well, but even I somehow forgot Nashville is --- and always been -- about more than just country.”

54-40 (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: August 19, 2016 - August 19, 2016

With over a million records sold worldwide, a career spanning more than 30 years, and a catalogue of hits that occupy the airways to this day, legendary Canadian pop/rock band 5440 released an album that re-imagines ten of their most popular songs. This is not a re-recording of these classic songs but rather a unique approach. In many ways these versions reveal the depth of the group’s songwriting, overshadowing the original versions. Featuring original arrangements of violin, guitar, banjo, mandolin and more by Daniel Lapp, La Difference: A History Unplugged gives new context and spirit to 10 classic songs fans all know and love.
This is an album that feels at once familiar and entirely new. Fans will be delighted to hear the folky stomp of Baby Ran, or the middle-eastern influenced arrangement of One Gun – combinations that until now, would’ve been hard to imagine.

Lighthouse (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: August 18, 2016 - August 18, 2016

Recognized as one of the best performing acts of their time, they toured 300 days a year including sold out performances at Carnegie Hall, The Fillmore East, Fillmore West, Expo ’70 in Japan and the Isle of Wight Festival in England where they were the only act besides Kris Kristofferson (who had trouble with his sound system) asked to perform twice among acts that including The Doors, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, The Who and Chicago. Back home, their free concerts at Toronto’s Nathan Philips Square attracted one hundred thousand people. Indeed, it’s hard to find a person who lived in Canada through the 1970s who didn’t see the group live. They were Canada’s band.
Free-wheeling, high-spirited – the music of Lighthouse mirrored the times. Their story is interwoven with the history of late twentieth century Canada. Their rise to fame coincided with a new awareness of Canadian culture. Riding the wave, Lighthouse originated the cross-Canada rock tour playing every major and minor venue across the country. Devoted audiences from prove to provide took pride in seeing one of their own make it to the top.
