Nuclear: The other clean energy that needs to be part of the climate change conversation (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 16, 2016 - March 16, 2016

Presented by Dr. Neil Alexander, Executive Director, Sylvia Fedoruk Canadian Centre for Nuclear Innovation The COP 21 climate summit was almost entirely lit by electricity produced in nuclear power plants. It was almost entirely emissions free and these facts were almost entirely ignored by conference delegates. Under the Paris Agreement, nations have committed to setting - and keeping - ambitious targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while also ensuring economic development and opportunity for the developing world. While it largely went unnoticed, nuclear energy was touted by climatologists and thought leaders as part of the necessary solution to this sustainability dilemma. As Canada embarks on its own path to a low-carbon economy, what is the potential role for nuclear energy domestically and how can Canada contribute to nuclear leadership and innovation internationally? Attempts on Her Life (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 16, 2016 - March 16, 2016

Attempts on Her Life is an exciting rollercoaster of late 20th-century obsessions that are woven into the fabric of our times. This is especially true for young people who must confront the challenges of ubiquitous pornography and violence in the media, terrorism on our doorstep, and the possibility of danger in every relationship. At the centre of this work is the idea that coherent identity is a myth. It is a meditation in seventeen scenes on a woman, Annie, who may be a terrorist on the run, or an artist who has turned her suicide attempts into her art, or a traveller who has her photo taken by millionaires' swimming pools and in slums, or a woman whose children have been killed in civil war, or is even a child herself. Crimp's play is a dramatic prose-poem that suggests the idea of the individual ego is being steadily eroded by mixture of rampant consumerism, global capitalism, and technological advance. The play is the one that will generate engaged discussion. This play contains mature themes.

Paradise Lost: Public Reading (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 9, 2016 - March 9, 2016

Paradise Lost: Public Reading with Dr. Jeanne Shami, Professor Emeritus, Department of English, and others. Members of the community - teachers, students, staff, and interested members of the public - are invited to an "epic" reading of John Milton's Paradise Lost. While this event has been staged in various venues over the last two decades, this year's reading will be special in at least two ways. Former University of Regina President and current University of Manitoba President, Dr. David Barnard, will return to reprise his role as Narrator - a part that requires him to perform over the entire course of the 12-hour event. It is in large part due to Dr. Barnard's active encouragement and participation that this event was launched in its early days, and we appreciate his ongoing enthusiasm for language and for fostering vibrant intellectual communities. This is also the year that our "Satan," Professor Nick Ruddick of the Department of English, will retire, and it seemed fitting to engage him in one last dramatic encounter before he goes on to other adventures.

2016 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 8, 2016 - March 8, 2016

Wikimedia's gender trouble is well-documented. In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. This represents an alarming absence in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. Let's change that. Join us for an all-day communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism. People of all gender identities and expressions welcomed and encouraged to attend. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian and reference materials. Bring your laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. For the editing-averse, we urge you to stop by to show your support. This 2016 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon node is hosted at the University of Regina by Dr. Megan Smith, Assistant Professor in Creative Technologies and UofR students from CTCH 301 PLAY, Faculty of Media+Art+Performance, in collaboration with the University of Regina Library. The World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: March 4, 2016 - March 4, 2016

The Legend Lives On…In 1937, Glenn Miller stepped out to form his own band, but it was not to be. Formed in March 1938, the second Glenn Miller Orchestra soon began breaking attendance records all up and down the East Coast. There were record-breaking recordings, as well, such as Tuxedo Junction, which sold 115,000 copies in the first week. In the Mood & Pennsylvania 6-5000 all appeared on the RCA Victor Bluebird label. There was also Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade, a radio series which aired three times a week over CBS.
During the war, he ultimately organized the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. After being shipped to England, the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band engaged in over 800 performances in less than one year. After the tragic death of Miller in 1944, the band was reformed. The 'Glenn Miller Orchestra' continued to record and perform under various leaders starting in 1956. The band continues to play many of the original Miller arrangements and are also playing more modern selections in the big-band style, carefully selecting only those newer tunes that lend themselves naturally to the Miller style and sound.
Songs: Moonlight Serenade, In The Mood, Tuxedo Junction & Chattanooga Choo Choo

The Irish Rovers – 50th Anniversary Tour (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: March 3, 2016 - March 3, 2016

The story of the Irish Rovers starts in Canada in 1963, when the 16-year old George Millar and 23-year old Jim Ferguson, both new emigrants from Northern Ireland, met in Toronto at an Irish function. They ended up singing together 'til dawn; and so the Irish Rovers were launched. They performed as a duo until George's cousin, Joe Millar, immigrated to Canada the following year. Joe, who played button-key accordion and harmonica, and also sang traditional ballads, was recruited as he stepped off the plane. After several months of engagements around Ontario, the trio made their way to Calgary, where they joined forces with George's brother, Will Millar.
These international ambassadors of Irish music have charmed and entertained people around the world for more than four decades and continue to delight audiences with their exciting stage shows. The Irish Rovers have never lost their timeless ability to deliver a rollicking, rousing performance of good cheer that will soon have you singing and clapping along! The band features original members George Millar and Wilcil McDowell along with John Reynolds, Sean O’Driscoll, Ian Millar & Fred Graham. The band returned to the world music charts in 2011 with their album, Home in Ireland. In 2012, they released the single, The Titanic from their Drunken Sailor album.
Songs: Wasn't That a Party, Unicorn, Irish Rover, Did She Mention My Name, Rhymes and Reasons & Years May Come Years May Go

The Trews Acoustic (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: February 26, 2016 - February 26, 2016

The band that would eventually become The Trews was formed in high school in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. In 2002, the band won a rock search contest which would prove to be their big break as they soon landed a recording contract with Sony BMG Canada. The release of their first full-length CD, House of Ill Fame, was released in 2003 and featured the singles “Not Ready to Go”, “Tired of Waiting” and “Fleeting Trust”. “Not Ready to Go” hit #1 on Canadian rock radio and was the most played song of 2004 in that format. The band was nominated as New Group of the Year at the 2004 Juno Awards and “Not Ready to Go” was nominated as Single of the Year in 2005.

They wasted no time piling success on top of success, watching their stature grow with multiple hit singles and an incomparable live show, courting exhaustion while they fanned out across the world.

The tensions were audible on 2008’s No Time for Later. The band’s third album was its most accomplished and satisfying, but emerged uptight and dark. Not insignificantly, the second single was called “Paranoid Freak”. They were offered the Tragically Hip’s fabled Bathouse Recording Studio and a couple months later had a new album – “Hope and Ruin”. If the Trews were tired when they walked into the Bathouse, they were rejuvenated by the time they walked out, having found hope in ruin.

Songs: “Not Ready to Go”, “Tired of Waiting”, “Poor Ol' Broken Hearted Me”, “Hold Me In Your Arms”, “Paranoid Freak”, “Man of Two Minds”, “Fleeting Trust”, “So She's Leaving”, “Yearning” & “Hope and Ruin”.

Tickets on sale October 14 for Players Club Members, October 16 for general public.

The project suggests it's possible to make an engaging film with high production values on a meager budget. Bio: Brian Stockton is a filmmaker and educator who works in a variety of genres including animation, documentary and drama. He holds an MFA from York University and was a director resident at Norman Jewison's Canadian Film Centre. His recent focus has been on humourous autobiographical films including his acclaimed Saskatchewan Trilogy (2002-2006), and the one-hour documentary My Dinner with Generation X (2010). His latest project is the feature film comedy The Sabbatical (2015). He currently teaches film production at his alma mater, the University of Regina.

Traditional Indigenous Governance in Contemporary Society (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 24, 2016 - February 24, 2016

Presented by Marilyn Poitras, Vice President of Indigenous Governance, Institute on Governance The signal from the current federal government regarding Indigenous people is one of relationship building, nation to nation partnerships and work on education and language. Although this may be a new script for the non-Indigenous government, it is not news to Indigenous communities and leadership who have been saying this for several hundred years. Not only is it not new, it is consistent with traditional governance principles within natural laws, spiritual laws and even Indigenous man made laws. This lecture will begin to explore what it could mean to institutionalize traditional principles of Indigenous governance in our modern governance processes. Honeymoon Suite with Lee Aaron (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: February 13, 2016 - February 13, 2016

Honeymoon Suite – Johnnie Dee and Derry Grehan, principal and founding members of Honeymoon Suite, met when introduced by their former manager in 1982. Deciding to work together, they formed Honeymoon Suite. In 1983, they entered a Homegrown Contest put on by a Toronto radio station. New Girl Now won them the contest and the band was signed by a label. Their first album was released in 1984. Their second album, The Big Prize was released in 1986 and went platinum in Canada almost immediately and started selling steadily in the US. The trio returned to the studio in 1990 to craft Monsters Under The Bed. Singles like Say You Don’t Know Me and The Road did well in Canada.

Band members: Johnnie Dee, Derry Grehan, Peter Nunn, Dave Betts & Gary Lalonde

Songs: New Girl Now, Bad Attitude, What Does it Take, Feel it Again, Burning Love & Still Lovin' You

Lee Aaron – In recent years Lee Aaron has found a comfortable reconciliation of her parental ideals and rock ‘n’ roll heart. Tempered by the wisdom that motherhood brings, she’s no longer concerned by the stereotyping that relentlessly pursued her since the 1984 release of her iconic album Metal Queen. Instead, she’s now able to understand why the label stuck, and can – almost cheerfully – discuss her relationship with the mythology that is actually an acute counterpoint to her fundamental artistic vision.

Tickets on sale October 14 for Players Club Members, October 16 for general public.

The Sheepdogs with Beat Cops (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: February 12, 2016 - February 12, 2016

Some listeners may argue that the sounds soaring from their speakers while listening to the Saskatoon band are familiar relics of decades past, and they’d be right; however, it’s the manner in which The Sheepdogs borrow bits from classic, psychedelic, and boogie rock iconoclasts like Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Allman Brothers, and The Grateful Dead and mix them with modern rock sensibilities that really sets them apart.
Over the years, The Sheepdogs have trekked across Canada in their beaten-down van playing as many new cities as possible. They released their first independent album Trying To Grow in 2007. In 2012, they won three Juno Awards: Rock Album of the Year, Best New Group and Single of the Year (I Don't Know). Their highly successful follow-up, 2012’s The Sheepdogs, featuring the instantly-recognizable, Gold-certified singles “Feeling Good” and “The Way It Is.”
In 2015 The Sheepdogs released Future Nostalgia which builds upon The Sheepdogs’ foundation of feel-good vocal harmonizing and nasty guitar jamming. “Our musical journey has been about trying to find how we sound our best,” states Currie, and the album represents the pinnacle of their progress thus far. That’s made immediately clear from the opening riff of “Downtown,” an undeniable straight-up rocker that sparkles with the warmth of summer. Down at the other end of the street is “Bad Lieutenant,” which walks a dark and sexy strut courtesy of bassist Ryan Gullen and drummer Sam Corbett, who also tear up the furious “I Really Wanna Be Your Man.”
'Mikey Heppner and Tim Fletcher began playing music together in Montreal punk rock band, 'The Dropouts', when they met in 2001. 'Priestess' and 'The Stills' (Heppner and Fletcher's respective side-projects, go ahead and google them) both ended up taking up a lot of time for them, so their collaboration had been quite minimal until July 2014 when the two began taking themselves seriously once again. Enlisting the young and able Max Hébert (Les Breastfeeders, High Dials, etc etc.) on drums, and the even younger but no less sensational Pat Bennett (from the legendary 'Trigger Effect') on guitar and keys, ...Beat Cops... was formed. Their music has been compared to other music, and their live concerts have been described as 'loud', and 'fun'. For years now, Heppner has been hearing things in his head and it has been quite frightening to him, but the way Beat Cops have managed to translate this into actual music songs is quite acceptable! When listening, you might, for example, get the feeling that 'huge guitars' were employed to achieve the sounds you're hearing, when by all means, they were actually quite normal-sized guitars. Their debut album, "MEAN STREETS", is out now on Indica Records.
