Category: Other EventDates: November 27, 2015 - November 27, 2015
Presented by Munir Sheikh, Executive Fellow, School of Public Policy, University of Calgary There has been concern that public policy decisions are not based on evidence as much as one would like. This presentation will argue that there are many benefits of evidence-based policy development, supporting this hypothesis with an example. It will show that the use of evidence, in many cases, can avoid difficult trade-offs. It will also offer a paradigm that focuses on two drivers of policy development: leadership and evidence, and uses this to provide a categorization of many Canadian policies into four groups. This paradigm is used to provide guidance for public servants/analysts and leaders responsible for policy formulation. Category: Other EventDates: November 25, 2015 - November 25, 2015
Join Johan Sandström, professor at Luleå University of Technology, as he discusses research that focuses on the labour process at two mines: The Kirunavaara iron ore mine in Sweden and the McArthur River uranium mine in Saskatchewan. Three questions are posed: (i) what are the interconnected acts of organizing that make up a modern mine's labour processes (who are involved, what do they do, who do they interact with, how do they enact or 'define their situation')?, (ii) how do these interconnected acts of organizing unravel changing power relations in the labour processes?, and (iii) how can the findings from the project help actors involved to better articulate (put into words) their role, situation and possibility to act (discretion) related to the changes in the labour processes?

Part 2: Oil Transportation (University of Regina)
Category: Other EventDates: November 25, 2015 - November 25, 2015
With new oil pipeline construction facing intense political opposition and despite the multiple rail accidents, including the 2013 Lac-Megantic rail disaster, Canadian oil producers continue to increasingly rely on rail to transport their product. Western Canada has seen dramatic growth in oil transport by rail over the past few years, with uploading capacity for crude oil expected to reach 1.4 million barrels per day by the end of 2015. This increased reliance on rail transport has put renewed focus on the safety and regulation of the industry. This presentation by Dr. Simon Enoch will outline the expansion of rail capacity for crude oil in Saskatchewan while also assessing the adequacy of current regulations to ensure the safe transport of this volatile commodity. This three-part lecture series examines safety in the oil extraction, transportation, and refinement sectors in Saskatchewan. Speakers provide a critical analysis of environmental, community, and occupational safety across the oil supply chain and identify gaps in the existing regulatory regimes. Part three in the series takes place Wednesday, December 2nd.

Presenter: Narmeen Ramadan, Regina Huda School Abstract: This research is a study of why students continue to attend faith-based schools, specifically an Islamic school in Saskatchewan, Canada. The study was based on interviews of seven participants from the graduating class of 2012, as well as 32 participants from Grades 9-12 who filled out an online survey. In particular, the narratives of seven Grade 12 students are presented in this paper and provide critical perspectives regarding the prospects and challenges of Islamic schooling in Canada. As a Muslim-English teacher and parent of a son who attends an Islamic school, this research is of personal as well as academic interest. Few studies have investigated the social and cultural dimensions of Islamic schools in Saskatchewan Canada and their implication on the Muslim identity as well as the Western society. The findings fills a void in the ethnographic literature by critically exploring Islamic Knowledge and Western Knowledge and finding a link through Western Islamic schools.

Category: Other EventDates: November 24, 2015 - November 24, 2015
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are part of a new generation of nuclear power plant designs whose benefits include less on-site construction, increased containment efficiency and the ability to have greater quality controls. Saskatchewan, with its comparatively small population base, is not ideal for a conventional reactor that can produce upwards of 1000 megawatts of power. However, an SMR that produces anywhere from 10 to 300 megawatts could be a good fit for Saskatchewan's energy needs. What is the future outlook for SMRs in Saskatchewan, what are the potential regulatory challenges and how is Canada's nuclear regulator, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, going to address them? Fine Arts Presentation Series (University of Regina)
Category: Other EventDates: November 20, 2015 - November 20, 2015
The Original Instrument: The Human Voice and the Human Body Bio - As a classically-trained singer, Helen Pridmore's early performing career focused on the beautiful music of the 18th and 19th centuries - Schubert, Mozart, Puccini. These, her first vocal loves, continue to be sources of inspiration and admiration. They offer a huge range of repertoire and show off the beauty of the human voice. In this talk, Pridmore asks, "But what is beauty anyway? How do we conceive of beauty in art, in music - in our bodies and our voices?" These questions have been at the centre of her research for the past ten years as she continues her exploration of the capabilities of the human voice in scored music of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and in extended techniques, improvisation, and performance-based work in various forms. Pridmore will also present some of her work and asks us to consider the question of beauty in our perceptions, our art and our lives.

Part 1: Oil Extraction (University of Regina)
Category: Other EventDates: November 18, 2015 - November 18, 2015
From the mid 2000s until 2014, Saskatchewan experienced an oil boom with record numbers of new wells being drilled and the increasing use of 'unconventional' extraction techniques. This talk examines the regulatory framework for oil and gas in the province and identifies a trend toward less oversight and industry self-regulation during a time of increased drilling and production activity. Based on interviews with rural landowners, oil workers and regulators, Dr. Emily Eaton outlines the impacts that decreasing regulatory oversight and compliance monitoring is having on rural lands and people. This three-part lecture series examines safety in the oil extraction, transportation, and refinement sectors in Saskatchewan. Speakers provide a critical analysis of environmental, community, and occupational safety across the oil supply chain and identify gaps in the existing regulatory regimes. Category: Other EventDates: November 18, 2015 - November 18, 2015
Presenters: Dr. Kathryn Ricketts and Dr. Patrick Lewis, Faculty of Education, University of Regina Abstract: Story, play, and art are often thought of separate concepts and activities. However, the three are actually symbiotically interrelated and we can see the evidence of that in the daily activities of children. Through storytelling with children we can facilitate a story curriculum and play pedagogy that creates a rich supportive environment for children to develop their narrative identities and imaginings. This presentation will also outline a performative approach whereby characters and movement are developed through a 3rd space of creative synthesis with images, words and movement allowing the diversity of the interpreter as the primary focus. Through clear examples we hope to demonstrate the benefits of harnessing cultural difference as a rich source for multiple readings in the development of narratives through and with performance outlining how this process triggers themes and issues that arise in creating a complex and diverse communities of meaning makers. Category: Live MusicDates: November 7, 2015 - November 7, 2015
Platinum Blonde is back, but don’t call it a reunion. In reality, it’s more like the band has simply taken a finger off of the pause button with the release of its new album, Now & Never.
The band’s four albums have collectively gone platinum seven times over. They have garnered multiple Juno Award nominations and been inducted into the Music and Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame. Indeed, re-ignition of the band has been a very long time coming but it wasn’t for lack of demand. Appetite for the signature new wave rock sound that swept up throngs of fans has hardly waned since the boys pressed pause in 1991.
As the years passed the band became somewhat of a cult mystery. When electronic dance tastemakers Crystal Castles teamed with Robert Smith of The Cure in 2010 to record a cover version of Platinum Blonde’s “Not In Love”, an entire new generation of fans began clamoring to discover the band’s music.
The panache and passionate soul of Platinum Blonde’s music is vivid in the 10 tracks that comprise Now & Never. A finely wrought mélange of crisp rock and sultry electro-pop, the leading single “Beautiful” entwines highly evolved strings and guitar work over an intense beat that is capable of holding any dance floor captive. Throughout its entirety, seemingly contradictory rock and dance influences melt together seamlessly. Across time, the one constant of Platinum Blonde has always been an unquenchable yen to evolve. With Now & Never, the band that’s made a career of forging its own path continues to roam free.
Songs: “Doesn’t Really Matter”, “Crying Over You”, “Standing In The Dark”, “Not In Love”, “Situation Critical”, and “Sad Sad Rain”.

Home Free (Casino Regina)
Category: Live MusicDates: November 6, 2015 - November 6, 2015
When country a cappella band, Home Free, was crowned Season 4 Champion of NBC's The Sing-Off in December, 2014, their victory was by no means the beginning of a career for the five country stars from Minnesota… rather it was a satisfying culmination of nearly a decade of hard work and commitment to a vocal craft growing in popularity. Founded by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp during their college years in the early 2000s, Home Free had been perfecting their live show for years prior to The Sing-Off, performing together for crowds in countless State and County Fairs, on college campuses, in Fortune 500 companies and in theaters all across the country. It was their experience on the road that carried them to a Sing-Off victory, swelling their fan base and bringing their homegrown country style into a national spotlight. Home Free continues to entertain audiences with their high-energy show peppered with quick-witted humor that meshes Nashville standards with pop hits dipped in country flavor. This spring they continue their journey as they take part in the 32-city, 36-show Sing-Off Tour Live! on the heels of their Columbia Records debut release, Crazy Life, in stores now.
Songs: “Any Way The Wind Blows”, “Your Man”, “Everything Will Be Okay”, “Jump Right In”.

Category: Live MusicDates: November 5, 2015 - November 5, 2015
Newfoundland's Alan Doyle learned piano and drums as a child but soon moved on to guitar, mandolin, bouzouki…pretty much anything with strings. At the age of 15 he joined his uncle's rockabilly-meets-traditional-Newfoundland band, The New Standells. While attending St. John's University he was one half of a duo called Staggering Home. Following a series of informal jam sessions, Doyle joined forces with Sean McCann, Bob Hallett and Darrell Power to form Great Big Sea. Their nine albums, double disc hits retrospective and two DVD releases have been declared Gold or Platinum and have sold a combined 1.2 million copies in Canada.
In 2012, Doyle released a solo album, Boy on Bridge which features collaborations with Canadian musicians Hawksley Workman, Jim Cuddy, Ron Hynes and actor-musician Russell Crowe, among others. The video for the second single, "Testify", was nominated for a 2012 Juno. The creation of the album was captured by a film crew resulting in a documentary, also named Boy on Bridge.
A second solo album, So Let’s Go, was released in January, 2015. In 2014, Doyle became a published author with the release of Where I Belong which is about growing up in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“End of the World”, “Ordinary Day”, “When I’m Up (I Can’t Get Down)”, “Testify”, “So Let’s Go”.
