National Have A Heart Campaign at the University of Regina (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 8, 2016 - February 8, 2016

Have A Heart Day is a child and youth-led reconciliation campaign that brings together caring Canadians to help ensure First Nations children have the services they need to grow up safely at home, get a good education, be healthy, and be proud of who they are. From February 8th to 12th, an information table about the inequalities in funding for services for First Nations children will be set up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in RIC Atrium, along with the opportunity to send letters to MPs and the Prime Minister to encourage them to make necessary changes. Participate in fun, free and education activities scheduled throughout the week including the Blanket Exercise, Cardmaking, Cartooning, Treaty Talk, and a mass mailing of letters to Parliament Hill. This campaign comes 2 weeks following the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal that concluded that First Nations children and families living on reserve and in the Yukon are discriminated against in the provision of child and family services. The Truth and Reconciliation Report also issues a number of calls to action that specifically call for inequalities in First Nations child welfare, education, and health to be addressed. Media, Art, and Performance Presentation Series (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 29, 2016 - January 29, 2016

Dr. Charity Marsh - CRC, Faculty of MAP and Darci Anderson - Principal, Flux School of Human Movement Title: The Promise Of Movement Within the realm of physical and athletic culture there has been a growing trend towards a culture, philosophy and an ethics of movement. The purpose of this talk is to introduce this current investment in a discourse of movement, rather than sport, exercise, or fitness. We suggest that underlying this turn towards movement and the movement arts is a promise - the promise of movement. Drawing on contemporary examples from the disciplines of Capoeira, Parkour, Contemporary Dance, as well as the recent example of the UFC's Conor McGregor's inclusion of Ido Portal's movement practice, we will pose and answer the following questions: What is this promise? What is this promise a response to? And what might it mean to deliver on this promise? More information: http://www.uregina.ca/finearts/events/2016/01/FAPS.html

Headstones with Poor Young Things (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: January 26, 2016 - January 26, 2016

Tickets on sale December 16 for Players Club Members, December 18 for general public.
Canadian punk-rock band Headstones, formed in Kingston, Ontario in 1987, began their early music career performing to anyone who would listen. At the time, artists such as Neil Young and Leonard Cohen were gracing the charts on Canadian radio while American musician Stevie Ray Vaughn was reviving the blues south of the border. Headstones decided to take a much different approach.
Carrying a similar attitude to Iggy Pop and Henry Rollins, Hugh Dillon led members Trent Carr, Tim White and Dale Harrison into becoming a band synonymous with the real Canadian road-worn punk, touring their anti-social behaviour across the country to rough and restless fans.
With nearly six years of touring, songwriting and growing infamy, they were signed to MCA Records (now Universal Music Group) in 1993. They quickly released Picture of Health through their new label, earning them platinum status on the Canadian charts. Their second release, Teeth and Tissue, reached gold in 1995.
Within a couple of years, the band had solidified itself as a commercial force in the music industry, dominating the charts and airwaves with hits off 1996’s gold-selling album Smile and Wave. Their achievements soon culminated, when the band received Juno Award nominations for Best Group and Best Rock Album that same year. Following this peak in their success, Headstones put out two other records, Nickels For Your Nightmares in 2000 and The Oracle of Hi-Fi in 2002. The band officially broke up one year later in 2003, still ranked as one of the most commercially successful Canadian rock bands.
In 2010, Hugh Dillon received an unexpected phone call from a longtime friend and collaborator who had co-wrote “Cemetery”, one of the Headstones’ most popular songs. He was terminally ill, and would be leaving his young family in dire straits. Almost immediately, Dillon rushed to get the Headstones back together to play a benefit concert, which resulted in a handful of sold-out shows in Ontario. This experience allowed the Headstones to re-capture the spirit of camaraderie that originally drew them together.

Philosophy Café - Knowing Better: Objectivity and the Skills of Self-Knowledge by Dr. Anna Mudde (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 25, 2016 - January 25, 2016

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The series runs each Fall and Winter semester. The Philosophy and Classics Department invites you to our first Philosophy Café discussion of Winter 2016. "Knowing Better: Objectivity and the Skills of Self-Knowledge" by: Dr. Anna Mudde, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Campion College It is by now a common idea that to know well is to know objectively, that is, without subjective bias. Yet there have long been philosophical questions about objectivity - what it is and what it requires. In this talk, I consider theories of objectivity that require knowledge of one's own subjectivity, and suggest that knowing better requires both a more robust account of objectivity and techniques for accessing subjective self-knowledge.

Headpins with Holly Woods and Toronto (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: January 23, 2016 - January 23, 2016

Headpins – Originally formed by Brian MacLeod and Ab Bryant as a sort of 'side project' from Chilliwack, their impact was immediate even before they'd landed a record deal. The band's live magnetism was rivaled by few and they soon became one of the hottest commodities in Canadian rock.

A greatest hits package was released in 2002 to the delight of classic rock fans. The only compilation currently available to span all 3 records, The Complete Greatest Hits is a multi-media event with 14 killer tracks that helped shape Canadian rock,

Songs: Turn It Loud, Don't It Make Ya Feel, Just One More Time, Celebration & Double Trouble
Members: Original members: Darby Mills (singer), Bernie Aubin (drummer), & Ab Bryant (bass). Additional members: Tony Della Croce, and Alfie Galpin.

Holly Woods and Toronto - After testing the waters with a small Ontario tour in 2011, Holly Woods and Barry Connors rocked hard in 2012 to regain their fan base. Now in 2016, with a very tight, well played 'all-star band' of exceptional players, featuring Steve Shelski, Guitar, (Coney Hatch), Tom Lewis, Bass Guitar and Vocals, (Tom Cochrane, Alan Frew, Amanda Marshall), and Peter Kadar, Keyboards and Vocals, (Alan Frew), Holly Woods and Toronto are turning their brand of classic rock loose on Canada, from east coast to west coast. This version of a great Canadian Icon will be performing a full show of TORONTO classics with a 'twist'.

Tickets on sale October 14 for Players Club Members, October 16 for general public.

Fame does not seem to have impacted him from being the same country farm boy from Fargo, ND who got his start in the local clubs of Minneapolis. He survived the passage of youth to adulthood, fell in love, began a family, and in the process passed through the life lessons we all endure. He has a keen sense of what he aims to achieve creatively, what music means to him, and is focused on the impact that his songs bring to the lives of those that encounter his repertoire. For Lang, with the release of Fight For My Soul, he is entering a chapter wherein he has found his true voice.
In his career spanning over a decade, Lang has toured with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Aerosmith and B.B. King. He has seven albums, five of which have charted on the top 50 of Billboard’s Top 200 list. Lang also won a Grammy Award for his 2006 album Turn Around.
Tickets on sale November 18 for Players Club Members, November 20 for general public.

I'm Not a Feminist But... A Brief History of Canadian Women's Activism (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 20, 2016 - January 20, 2016

Open Minds: Debating Public Issues presents: I'm Not a Feminist But... "Because it's 2015." So said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when, in Fall 2015, he announced his gender-balanced Cabinet. For the first time in history, Canada's Members of Parliament are almost completely balanced in terms of male and female representation. Does this gender-balanced Cabinet mean that Prime Minister Trudeau is a feminist? What is feminism, anyway? This talk will address these questions, offering a brief history of Canadian women's struggles for equality. From the 1967 Royal Commission on the Status of Women to the launching of Take Back the Night Marches to the recently announced national inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, this talk will examine what it has meant, exactly, to support women's rights in Canada. DONICA BELISLE, Department of History, University of Regina with Darlene Juschka, Women's and Gender Studies & Carmen Robertson, Visual Arts.

This three-part lecture series examines safety in the oil extraction, transportation, and refinement sectors in Saskatchewan. Speakers provide a critical analysis of environmental, community, and occupational safety across the oil supply chain and identify gaps in the existing regulatory regimes. Parts one and two of the series took place on Wednesday, November 18th and Wednesday, November 25th.

Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy—Two Fiddles Two Pianos (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: November 30, 2015 - November 30, 2015

To fans of fiddle music, Natalie MacMaster needs no introduction. In a recording career that spans 25 years, this Order of Canada recipient has released 11 albums with sales of over 200,000. She has won two JUNO Awards, 11 East Coast Music Awards, been nominated for a Grammy, is in great demand as a charismatic performer and has collaborated with artists as diverse as Yo-Yo Ma (on the Grammy-winning album, Songs of Joy & Peace), Alison Krauss, Jesse Cook and Bela Fleck. Though acknowledging that she can be a musical chameleon, Natalie stresses that, above all else, "I play Cape Breton fiddle."
Her husband, Donnell Leahy, is no stranger to the awards podium himself. He is the oldest brother of the internationally-acclaimed family musical group Leahy, winners of three JUNO Awards. Widely recognized as one of the best Celtic fiddlers in the world, his high-energy playing style also makes him a highly popular performer.
The Cape Breton-raised MacMaster and the Ontario born-and-bred Leahy grew up with different fiddle music traditions and they still utilize different techniques on their beloved instrument. While retaining their own individual styles, they have now learned to complement each other's playing in a way only a married couple with such personal chemistry and a joint passion for music can.

Philosophy Café: Rationality and Linguistic Communication - Dr. Ryan Doran (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 30, 2015 - November 30, 2015

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The series runs each Fall and Winter semester. The Philosophy and Classics Department invites you to our third Philosophy Café discussion of Fall 2015. Rationality and Linguistic Communication Presented by: Dr. Ryan Doran, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Regina The phenomenon of linguistic communication is so commonplace that we often fail to see how effortlessly and effectively it takes place. Explaining how this is possible, however, is a difficult task. Traditional themes in the philosophy of language concerning the relationship between language and the world, or language and the mind, have for the most part left the workings of discourse as an afterthought. In this talk Dr. Doran will discuss ways in which the supposition that speakers are engaged rationally in conversation has a role to play not only in understanding communication but also in understanding more general phenomena such as meaning and reference. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend!

Le 'moment' 68 en Acadie de la Nouvelle-France (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 30, 2015 - November 30, 2015

French free conference hosted by La Cité and l'Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS), Saskatchewan. Presented by M. Poplyansky, Ph.D., Instructor at Department of French and francophone intercultural studies at La Cité universitaire francophone.
