Seminar by Dr. Robert Holte, U of A: Bidirectional Search that is Guaranteed to Meet in the Middle (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 9, 2016 - May 9, 2016

Dr. Robert Holte, a collaborator of Dr. Sandra Zilles, will be visiting from the University of Alberta to give a special seminar presentation. He will be talking about his work (with co-authors Ariel Felner, Guni Sharon, and Nathan R. Sturtevant) that won the 2016 Outstanding Paper Award at a major conference. Dr. Holte is a highly renowned researcher in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and an excellent speaker, who will give a keynote address at another major AI conference later this year. The presentation will be aimed at a general Computer Science audience. No topic-specific background knowledge will be expected. Abstract: In this talk I will present MM, the first bidirectional heuristic search algorithm whose forward and backward searches are guaranteed to "meet in the middle", i.e. never expand a node beyond the solution midpoint. I also present a novel framework for comparing MM, A*, and brute-force search, and identify conditions favouring each algorithm. Our analysis reveals several fundamental differences between unidirectional search and bidirectional search. Finally, I present experimental results that support the conjectures arising from our analysis. More information: https://www.facebook.com/events/248743718807359/

Bernie Jessome as Roy Orbison (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: May 6, 2016 - May 6, 2016

Bernie Jessome began his musical career singing with The Esquires and as his career took off he found himself opening for his idol Roy Orbison and groups like The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. In 1991 he formed a Roy Orbison Tribute production called Shades of Yesterday. He then connected with the huge Legends of Rock and Roll organization and toured Canada cast in the role of Roy Orbison. Bernie has performed throughout the United States and spent more than a year with the U.S. based American Superstars. His spellbinding performances as Roy Orbison throughout England during the spring of 1995 were the talk of the theatre circuit. Touring the continent as his idol in The Roy Orbison Story, Bernie Jessome is having the time of his life. The time and thought that went into the production of the show are remarkable. The extremely high caliber of the participants, the involvement of Sam Orbison and the warm and welcome reception from Roy Orbison fans throughout North America make this presentation a truly wonderful experience. Jessome comments, "Orbison was, in the eyes of Elvis Presley and many other great musicians, the best singer in the world. The tragedies of losing his wife in a motorcycle accident in 1966 and two years later losing two of his three sons to a house fire, didn't stop this unique person from continuing his musical work. He is a true legend and it is a privilege to sing in the memory of the irreplaceable Roy Orbison."

JSGS Public Lecture ~ Towards a Canadian Climate Strategy: Avoiding the Hammer (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 5, 2016 - May 5, 2016

Featuring: Trevor McLeod, Director of the Centre for Natural Resources Policy, Canada West Foundation Given the current state of the Alberta and Saskatchewan economies, the prairie provinces may think they won't be asked to do more on climate change to address international commitments. However, if the Trudeau government is serious about meeting Canada's global environmental commitments, Alberta and Saskatchewan should be very concerned. What type of strategy should Canada and the provinces adopt to reduce emissions without hobbling the Canadian economy? As Director of the Centre for Natural Resources Policy, Trevor McLeod investigates and makes recommendations on policies that will champion the responsible development of the West's natural resources. Trevor has worked in corporate and natural resources law, regulatory compliance in forestry, and in the Alberta Department of Energy, focusing on energy market diversification. A native of Meadow Lake, Sask., he holds a B.A. and a J.D. from the University of Saskatchewan and a Masters degree in law from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. His nuanced understanding of the issues facing natural resource development in western Canada helps to deliver practical solutions. The follow-up, 1989’s Repeat Offender, was even more successful, hitting #1 and going quadruple-platinum with two #1 singles in “Satisfied” and “Right Here Waiting.” When both Rush Street (with two #1 AC hits in “Keep Coming Back” and “Hazard”) and Paid Vacation (with its #1 AC hit, “Now and Forever”) went platinum, Marx achieved a seven-year string of triumphs that rivaled any in pop-rock music history. To this day, he is the only male artist in history to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 on the Billboard charts.
For most artists, that would be impressive enough – but Richard Marx didn’t stop there, launching a second, very successful, incarnation as a songwriter and producer, with songs like “To Where You Are,” the first hit single from Josh Groban’s debut album, as well as the NSYNC smash, “This I Promise You.” He went on to earn a 2004 Song of the Year Grammy for co-authoring Luther Vandross’ “Dance with My Father.” Across all formats, Marx has scored an amazing total of 14 #1 singles (including Keith Urban’s #1 smash “Long Hot Summer”) both as a performer and songwriter/producer, making him a true multi-talented threat who continues to challenge himself and his fans. He has also written with Jennifer Nettles, Sara Bareilles and Vince Gill. He holds the honor of being one of a handful of artists who have had a number one hit in each of the past four decades.

Presented by: David Herle, Principal at the Gandalf Group David Herle will discuss the relationship between public opinion and public policy, and the role that government can, but does not always, play in shaping public opinion. Herle will compare fiscal policy in the 1990's, when governments persuaded Canadians that deficits needed to be conquered, and now when public opinion is taking government finances in the opposite direction. David Herle is one of Canada's most sought after public affairs and corporate strategists, having helped CEOs manage crises, union leaders shape their public appeals and directing winning campaigns for both prime ministers and premiers. David's strategic and political acumen can be seen on CBC's The National, where he provides biweekly commentary on "The Insiders" panel. A Saskatchewan native, David earned his Bachelor of Arts at the University of Regina and was called to the Bar in Ontario after receiving his LLB from the University of Saskatchewan. Best of the 2016 Winnipeg Comedy Festival (Casino Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 9, 2016 - April 9, 2016

The CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival was the brainchild of Al Rae and CBC Radio’s Tom Anniko. Twelve years later, the festival remains one of Winnipeg’s flagship cultural events. The Winnipeg Comedy Festival is proud to be the highest-rated comedy festival series on CBC Television.
Big Daddy Tazz HOST - For more than a decade and a half, Tazz has been delighting crowds at fundraisers, corporate events, festivals and television. He recorded his own Comedy Now! special in 2008 and has appeared in many national festivals including Just for Laughs, the Moncton Comedy Festival and of course, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. At the 2008 festival, Tazz earned the moniker “Marathon Man of Mirth” after performing an unprecedented 8.5 continuous hours of stand-up.
Peter White - Peter White started performing in comedy at a small upstairs bar in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2005, and has been moving upward ever since. After performing for less than a year, he was named one of the top five "up and coming" comics in Canada by CBC Radio One's "So, You Think You're Funny?", a national radio program designed to seek out the best unknown comedic talent from across the country.
Matt Nightingale - Matt Nightingale is a stand-up comic from Winnipeg whose act has been described as "inappropriate for a funeral setting". A regular guest at Rumor's Comedy Club, Matt has appeared in the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, the Winnipeg Improv Festival, and was invited to perform at the 2013 Just For Laughs Winnipeg Showcase. He hopes to one day own a slow cooker.
Starring Peter White, Matt Nightingale and Tim Nutt. Hosted by Big Daddy Tazz
Tim Nutt - Tim Nutt is a comic who can’t be judged by his cover. Long-haired, bearded and “rough around the edges” audiences expect Nutt’s material to match. But he surprises with razored-down punch lines and well conjured-up premises that place him as one of the top comics working today. Tim’s way of cutting through the Nonsense of everyday life has made him a favorite comic across the country. Tim is happy to be making his fourth Winnipeg Comedy Festival appearance.
Tickets on sale for Players Club Members February 24, General Public February 26.

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 4, 2016 - April 4, 2016

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student that runs each Fall and Winter semester. The Philosophy Café is free and open to the general public and all are welcome to attend. "Should We Keep Deathbed Promises" by: Dr. Eldon Soifer, Professor in the Philosophy and Classics Dept. Suppose you make a promise to somebody when that person is on his/her deathbed, but then afterwards you realize there are a whole bunch of reasons you hadn't thought of for not doing what you'd promised. Do you have to keep the promise anyway? If so, why? One common way of thinking about this involves the idea that you would somehow be harming the person you had made the promise to if you don't keep it-but if that person is dead, can s/he really be harmed? This discussion will explore a number of such puzzles that arise surrounding promises that have been made to people who are now dead.

Stapleford Lecture: Ronald Bloore and the Art of Provocation (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 31, 2016 - March 31, 2016

Timonthy Long Head Curator MacKenzie Art Gallery As director of the MacKenzie Art Gallery from 1958 to 1966, Ronald Bloore stirred controversy at every turn. Whether inventing a fictional artist, including his own work in shows he curated, or declaring art of the Renaissance to be "decadent", Bloore upset expectations and sparked debate. In the process, he put Regina's fledgling art scene on the map nationally and internationally, articulating a defiantly indigenous vision of modern art. The Watchmen, formed in 1988 in Winnipeg, MB are vocalist Daniel Greaves, guitarist Joey Serlin, bassist Ken Tizzard and drummer Sammy Kohn. Their show will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their quintessential, platinum certified sophomore album “In The Trees” - which was reissued in September 2014. Arguably one of the most commercially successful Canadian bands of the mid to late 90s, The Watchmen saw three of their albums certified gold – McLaren Furnace Room (1992), Silent Radar (1998) and Slomotion (2001) – in addition to the platinum certification of “In The Trees”.
“In The Trees” (Deluxe Edition) includes heavy hitting singles ‘Boneyard Tree,’ ‘All Uncovered’ and ‘Lusitana,’ reminding all of us of the hauntingly soulful vocals of Greaves, complimented by Serlin’s melodic guitar and Kohn’s hypnotic percussion. This past September, “Uncovered: The Story of The Watchmen”, which combines extensive research and unfettered access to the band to tell the story of The Watchmen’s twenty-plus years on the road – was released and captivated the genuine spirit of the group.

Screening of 'Elder in the Making' (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 23, 2016 - March 23, 2016

In between oil-rich Calgary where I live and the tourist town of Banff, there is an Indian reserve. The first time I visited it I was shocked by the broken down homes, the levels of addiction, and the lack of basic infrastructure. How is it possible that we have such levels of poverty in the middle of a land of wealth? However, I had no aboriginal friends to ask about the situation. The few interactions I did have through media or on the streets were generally not positive. And like many Canadians, my grasp of the history was superficial. I decided I had to learn more. So I headed on a road trip across traditional Blackfoot territory with Cowboy Smithx as my guide and a film crew for documentation. Elder in the Making is my personal way of exploring the forces of history large and small that has led us to where we are now. It is an invitation for you to connect with a rich and diverse aboriginal culture that has much to share about our home and about our relationship with the land. The film is only a small start on a long road of reconciliation. Below you will find other ways to engage such as face-to-face workshops, educational material, and resources. Reconciliation is a multi-generational affair that requires an on-going repair and renewal of a relationship with the people that helped build our country. It is my hope that you can be a part of it. - Chris Hsiung, Producer and Director More information: https://vimeo.com/120376379

Advocacy: Risky Business for Charitable/Nonprofit Corporations? (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 21, 2016 - March 21, 2016

Open Minds: Debating Public Issues presents: Advocacy: Risky Business for Nonprofit Corporations? Speaker: Gloria DeSantis, Department of Justice Studies Advocacy is a contested yet enduring concept on the Canadian charitable/nonprofit corporations landscape. Why is it so contested? Why was the term "advocacy chill" coined in Canada and why has it persisted over the past two decades, especially given collective advocacy is a form of public policy participation in democratic countries? This landscape is dominated by a rise in government surveillance, ongoing cyclical government funding cuts, a corresponding increase in charitable/nonprofit sector sense of confusion about "the rules", and fear. How advocacy is understood, defined, labelled and practiced has morphed and in many instances disguised itself, for the purposes of its very survival. Interestingly, the sector continues to inspire a litany of progressive public policies. More information: http://www.uregina.ca/arts/public-lectures/open-minds.html
