Entre science et politique: Comment se preparent les negociations de la Conference de Paris sur les changements climatiques (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 5, 2015 - November 5, 2015

JSGS/La Cité Public Lecture - Between Science and Politics: How are Negotiations Shaping Up for the Paris Conference on Climate Change (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 5, 2015 - November 5, 2015

Join us for the inaugural lecture in this series as we examine the context of the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 21), to be held in Paris from November 30 to December 11, 2015. We are particularly interested in the issues at stake in the negotiations at COP 21, which for many experts represents a turning point for our planet. What are the fundamental challenges of this international conference? Aside from the states, who are the principal players involved in the negotiations? How are Canada and its various provinces positioning themselves in the negotiations? How is scientific expertise being exploited? Made up of many countries around the world, is the Francophonie bringing a distinctive voice to the negotiations? The "Off the Beaten Track / Hors Champs" lecture series invites academics and stakeholders to dialogue with the general public in order to offer various perspectives on a significant contemporary issue: a synthesis of academic discussion, testimony from those working in the field, and critical perspectives. ReMeasure (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: November 4, 2015 - November 4, 2015

ReMeasure is a dynamic remix of Shakespeare's play Measure for Measure. Adapted and directed by faculty member Kathryn Bracht, this revisioning of one of Shakespeare's "problem plays" is set in a cabaret-like club in present day, and explores our current social mores through an impetuous pop-culture lens. Billed as a work in progress, ReMeasure draws inspiration culled straight out of today's headlines. The double nature of ReMeasure's Duke Angelo can be compared to the fall of popular media darlings Bill Cosby and Jian Ghomeshi, and the recent acceptance of gay marriage in countries such as Ireland and the USA, coupled with the very public transitioning of sports hero Bruce Jenner from man to woman - all of these events coalesce to inspire this very current exploration of Shakespeare's play. Ambitious and vibrant, ReMeasure endeavors to challenge your expectations and leave you highly entertained! (This play contains mature themes.)

Habermas - Making Sense of Community Leadership (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 28, 2015 - October 28, 2015

Presenter: Dr. Paul Kolenick, Faculty of Education, University of Regina Abstract: The social theory of Jurgen Habermas, and particularly his theory of communicative action, is explored as a framework in which to understand leadership and learning within the social context of communities. In particular, a relational approach to leadership is considered in terms of how leaders may act as "conveners of dialogue" toward thoughtful decision making. In this sense, perspectives on conversation and how to facilitate conversation will also be considered. The Theory and Method Seminar Series provides a forum for educators and students to discuss theory and method, research, and current initiatives in education. While designed to support grad students, it is also a series that can help keep faculty up-to-date on emerging methodologies. Faculty and students are encouraged to attend. Everyone is welcome. Public Engagement, Social Media and Health Policy: Exploring Opportunities and Challenges in the Stem Cell Sector (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 27, 2015 - October 27, 2015

Social media is well-placed to have a significant impact on the sharing of information, the shaping of public perceptions and the motivating of particular behaviors. There is much to be learned about influence in virtual networks and social media's potential as a vehicle for public engagement, particularly in areas of controversy such as emerging areas of science and biomedical research. This presentation will discuss on-going research funded by a Stem Cell Network Public Policy Impact Grant wherein we are exploring some of these questions in the context of stem cell research, with a particular focus on unproven stem cell-based interventions (or "stem cell tourism"). Philosophy Café: Addiction, Freedom, and Moral Character by Dr. David Elliott (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 26, 2015 - October 26, 2015

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The series runs each fall and winter semester. We invite you to our second discussion in the Philosophy Café Fall series presented by Dr. David Elliott who is a Professor of Philosophy at the U of R. "Addiction, Freedom, and Moral Character" There are at least two main conceptions of addiction. First, addiction is a specific *disease*, particularly of the brain's neurophysiology. Second, addiction is a cognitive choice made by individuals characterized by the rational considerations of competing harms, benefits and risks. It will be suggested that neither of these two important models seems to capture adequately all of the central features of addiction. Instead, thinking of addiction as a learned, developmental process - the development of a habit or character trait - may have more promise. In this regard, some familiar moral philosophers who have offered much on the topic of habituation - Aristotle and Aquinas - may be useful in understanding this important issue. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend!

Andy Kim (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 24, 2015 - October 24, 2015

Andy Kim's It's Decided transcends the galaxies of history within it. Renowned for 30 million records sold worldwide with eternal #1 hits like "Rock Me Gently", "Baby, I Love You" and The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar", the legendary songwriter and recording artist has captured a vibrant new sound, timeless in its opposing auras of permanence and ephemera. Co-written and produced by Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew, Ohad Benchetrit (Do Make Say Think) and Dave Hamelin (The Stills), It's Decided is the crystallization of a music community around a living, thriving legend.
Lead by Andy Kim's wisdom through his stunningly youthful vocals, the album's ten songs are accented by contributions by luminaries Ron Sexsmith, Jeff Barry, John McIntyre (Tortoise), Kevin Hearn (Barenaked Ladies), and Derek Downham. Surrendering to what Kim calls "the magic & the brilliance of Kevin Drew", songs with the impeccable intuition of a Hall of Fame songwriter shimmer with Drew's studio flourishes. A song like "Sail On" coasts on handclaps and a perfect chorus. The wistful "Shoot 'Em Up Baby", originally released by Kim in '68 with "Sugar, Sugar" co-writer Barry, shows glimpses of the original's ethereal doo-wop through bright new chiming piano. The album closing "Who Came First", rewritten from the Social Scene archives, shuffles upward with that familiar Broken sound of low, syncopated saxophone - another example of the wide-eyed reinvention that is It's Decided. As Drew says, this is "Andy's heartfelt want to still make it even though many would say his history is enough”. Gentle and enigmatic, ageless and ecstatic. "Andy Kim always looks to transcend and find the honesty in what he does and does with others.”
Songs: “Baby, I Love You So”, “Rock Me Gently”, “Sugar, Sugar”, “How’d We Ever Get This Way”, “Shoot ‘Em Up, Baby!” and “Amour”.
Tickets on sale May 13 for Players Club Members, May 15 for general public.

From Treaty Peoples to Treaty Nation: The Federal Election and the Future of Aboriginal Relations in Canada (University of Regina)

Dates: October 23, 2015 - October 23, 2015

Speaker: Dr. Greg Poezler Professor, Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy Department of Political Studies, College of Arts and Science Executive Chair of the International Centre for Northern Governance and Development, University of Saskatchewan, and Fulbright Arctic Initiative Scholar Staff from the University of Regina Bookstore will be on hand and have copies of Dr. Poelzer's co-authored book from UBC Press: From Treaty Peoples to Treaty Nation A Road Map for All Canadians Greg Poelzer and Ken S. Coates Book excerpt: "There are plenty of good, thoughtful, and creative solutions to the political challenges facing Aboriginal people in Canada. Most of these ideas operate at the level of ideals and political philosophy and are not yet grounded or tested in practice. At present, they represent idealized and diverse notions of what Canada could be. All agree that the issue is of great national importance. All agree that the status quo is not viable. All agree that major changes are in order, even as they disagree profoundly about what those changes should be. A merging of political ideals with practical realities could accomplish much." Saskatchewan, the next Norway? (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 22, 2015 - October 22, 2015

Only four decades ago, Norway was considered a bit of a backwater in Scandinavia. It lagged behind its Scandinavian neighbours in per capita wealth, education attainment and other economic and social indicators. It had a significantly higher rural population and an economy reliant on traditional industries such as fisheries and agriculture... Today, Norway is viewed as one of the best countries in the world in which to live... Norwegians have high life expectancy, almost no poverty, low levels of unemployment and high levels of education attainment. The country's vibrant economy, mostly known for its petroleum wealth, is more diversified than most realize. Saskatchewan has the core elements and opportunities needed to become the next Norway, with a high standard of living, equality of opportunity, carefully planned resource development and long-term economic stability. Achieving these goals will not be easy. Norway shows what is possible through smart policy decisions and the strategic use and investment of natural resource revenue.

Improving Student Performance by Addressing Student and Teacher Misconceptions about Learning (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 22, 2015 - October 22, 2015

Dr. Stephen L. Chew from Samford University in Birmingham, AL will examine common misconceptions among both students and teachers that undermine student learning. Students often overestimate their level of understanding, mistakenly believe they can multi-task effectively, and select poor learning strategies. Teachers often believe that student engagement, "active" learning, and struggle are critical to teaching effectiveness when these concepts have serious limitations. Dr. Chew will discuss and demonstrate some key cognitive principles that must be addressed for any pedagogy to be effective. Finally, he will describe a series of videos he developed to help students learn to study effectively based on cognitive research. More information: http://www.uregina.ca/ctl

Salt-N-Pepa (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 21, 2015 - October 21, 2015

Salt-N-Pepa gave females across the globe a voice within their communities and the music industry as a whole. As the first ever female rap crew, Salt-N-Pepa, broke barriers and opened doors wide open that were once closed to women in hip-hop. They gave women a voice in a male dominated industry and transformed the way the music world saw women forever. With the hit songs, "Push It", "Tramp", "Shake Your Thang", "Shoop" and "Whatta Man", Salt-N-Pepa would defy everyone's expectations and catapult hip-hop to new levels.
Twenty five years into their career, they continue to aspire to great heights with history making firsts. They are the first female rappers to receive a Grammy and three MTV Video Awards. Whether it's the top of the charts or on stages at sold out shows across the continent, Salt-N-Pepa, consisting of Cheryl James (Salt) and Sandy Denton (Pepa) along with Deidre "Dee Dee" Roper (DJ Spinderella), changed the face of hip-hop as we know it. No matter what you call them, Salt-N-Pepa revolutionized a people, changed a culture and totally revamped the way the world saw music forever. You can't list or mention the top rap songs of all time without their hit songs showing up. And you can't talk about music history without mentioning their names. Their contributions to a culture and to the world of hip hop has influenced the landscape and look of music as we know it today.

Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan Grits and Glamour Tour (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 16, 2015 - October 16, 2015

Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan are currently delighting old and new fans across North America on their highly successful Grits and Glamour tour. From the road to the red carpet, on centre stage in the theatre or under the spotlight in a honkytonk, these two women are comfortable in their high heels. Veteran recording artists and performers, they grace the country format with style, flair and undeniable talent that is captivating and timeless.
Their career highlights are numerous and varied. Combined, they have recorded 28 top 10 hits, sold more than 18 million records and 12 number one songs. There have been Grammys, Country Music Association Awards, movie credits, television appearances and Broadway performances. They have rocked arenas, helmed world-class symphonies and toured on almost every continent. These 50-somethings are more than a little flattered that they can still sell out shows, turn heads and make hearts beat quickly nearly four decades into their careers. It’s almost unnecessary to point out how rare it is to have such long-term success in an industry so fickle, but Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan haven't missed a beat. In fact, they both maintain extensive solo touring schedules enhanced by the buzz that surrounds the Grits and Glamour tour.
Formed in 2009, the Grits and Glamour tour is a “together is better” event. The show is only loosely scripted. Good-natured ribbing and off-the-cuff remarks are just part of the fun. They add tight harmonies to each other’s material, classic songs like Tillis' “Maybe It Was Memphis” and “Mi Vida Loca” and Morgan’s “Something In Red” and “Except for Monday” as well as new and original music from more recent recordings. The ladies are backed by some of Nashville’s finest musicians and singers. After years of working solo, both artists find teaming up fresh and interesting.
Songs: “Maybe It Was Memphis”, “Don’t Tell Me What To Do”, “Shake The Sugar Tree”, “A Picture Of Me”, “Good As I Was To You”, and “Something In Red”.

Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers The Wring’er Out Tour (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 14, 2015 - October 14, 2015

In 1983 Ray Johnson, Wayne Chaulk and Kevin Blackmore met. Having spent time playing for enjoyment, the trio found themselves in the summer of '85 playing a 10 day stint at the Newfoundland and Labrador pavilion of Toronto Caravan. They were part of an effort which won Caravan's Best Entertainment award. From there things grew so that their weekends got cluttered doing concerts and increasingly summers were taken up with touring. By 1987 they abandoned all previous occupations and collectively 'went at it'! The trio has toured throughout Canada in every province and territory for the last thirty plus years.
The live show is an amalgam of original songs, folk traditional Newfoundland songs, skits, monologues and recitations – in the style of an old fashioned concert. Their musical instruments are accordions, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bass guitar, whistles, garbage bags, juice cans, Frisbees and anything else that can be used for effect. There are four good voices on stage and the blending of these voices to create harmony is one of their strong points. The show moves along in an undulating emotional wave that is sometimes hilarious, gut wrenching, reflective, serious, and larmoyant. Pain killers may be needed for sore jaws.
Songs: “Sarah”, “Saltwater Joys”, “Is You 'Appy?”, “Chainsaw Earle”, ‘Goin' Up with Brudder”, and “The Pits & Song for Newfoundland”.
Tickets on sale March 18 for Players Club Members, March 20 for general public.

When Women Couldn't Vote: Federal Elections and Canadian History by Dr. Donica Belisle (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 14, 2015 - October 14, 2015

Canadian voter turnout in the last federal election was 61%. Certainly the people who, 100 years ago, fought for women's right to vote would have been appalled. To them, voting was a crucial democratic right, one that guaranteed equal standing in Canadian society. In this lecture, we will explore Canadian women's fight for the vote. We will also ask: why were so many Canadians against women's suffrage? Finally, we will see that although the Canadian state granted most women the right to vote in 1918, it continued to withhold that right from men and women of First Nations and Asian heritages. Professor Donica Belisle is a specialist in Canadian gender history. She is the author of Retail Nation: Department Stores and the Making of Modern Canada (UBC Press, 2011) and several articles on gender and consumer culture. She is fascinated by how Canadian gender roles have changed over time, and has spent far too many hours in the archives exploring this topic.

Shooter Jennings with Waymore’s Outlaws (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: October 10, 2015 - October 10, 2015

The only son of country legends Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, Shooter Jennings literally spent his childhood on a tour bus. Born Waylon Albright Jennings, Shooter was playing drums by the time he was five years old and had already begun taking piano lessons, He discovered guitar at 14 and rock ‘n roll (particularly Southern rock and the loose-limbed hard rock of Guns N' Roses) at 16. Soon he moved from Nashville to L.A. where he assembled a rock band called Stargunn. They earned a strong local reputation for its live shows and enjoyed a six- or seven-year run on the L.A. circuit before Jennings rediscovered his outlaw country roots and dissolved the band.
After a short stay in New York where Jennings assembled material for a country project, he returned to L.A. and put together a second band — this time with solid country roots — which he named the .357s. Jennings and the band holed up in the studio, eventually emerging with a rambunctious country album called Put the O Back in Country, which was released in 2005 on Universal South Records. Following in his father's footsteps, but with his own feisty, scrappy sense of country, Jennings placed himself in a fine position to both explore that legacy and carve out his own.
In 2011, Jennings’ latest band, Jennings and the Triple Crown, released the video/download-only single "Outlaw You," his screed against the country music establishment. It reached the top spot on CMT's daily audience request competition and stayed there until a dispute with his former label dictated it be removed. The first official single from the forthcoming album, The Deed and the Dollar, again reached the top spot in the daily CMT request competition. Jennings' fifth album, Family Man, followed soon after in March of 2012 — minus "Outlaw You".
Songs: “4th of July”, “Nashville From Afar”, “She Talks to Rainbows”, “You Are My Sunshine”, “The Door”, “She Thinks I Still Care”, and “Living In A Minor Key”.

Silence of the Labs - Screening and Discussion (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 8, 2015 - October 8, 2015

Did you know that over 2000 federal scientists have been fired over the past 6 years? From cutbacks in research funding to the muzzling of government scientists, from library closures to the erosion of environmental protections, many argue that evidence-based decision-making, and even science itself, are under attack. The U of R Women in Science and Engineering and Evidence for Democracy are sponsoring a screening of the CBC's documentary Silence of the Labs to engage voters in the upcoming election. The screening will be followed by an update on cutbacks since the documentary was broadcast in January 2014, as well as a discussion on what we can do about it. Admission is free.
