The Jurisdiction of Logic by Dr. Paul Simard Smith (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: October 7, 2015 - October 7, 2015

The Philosophy and Classics Department and Campion College invite you to a public lecture by Dr. Paul Simard Smith. "The Jurisdiction of Logic " A widely held view in the philosophy of logic is that the laws of logic are topic neutral. According to this view in any discussion whether the topic of the discussion is arithmetic, literary criticism, moral obligations to ecosystems, or baseball deductive reasoning in those discussions is valid if, and only if, that reasoning accords with the laws of logic. Recently several philosophers have contended that the endorsement of pluralism about truth provides grounds to endorse an alternative to the topic neutral view about the laws of logic. This alternative view holds that in different subject matters distinct logics can govern deductive reasoning in those subject matters. In this talk I set out to support an even more radical claim: the endorsement of truth pluralism not only provides reason to think that logics can change with changes in the subject matter, but it also provides reason to think that logics can change with changes in the context from which an inference is evaluated. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Smart Policing and the Challenge of Translational Criminology (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 30, 2015 - September 30, 2015

Dr Gordon Wicijowski Law Foundation of Saskatchewan Lecture Smart Policing and the Challenge of Translational Criminology Guest Speaker: Dr Scott H. Decker Foundation Professor School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Arizona State University Policing has had a lot of titles over the past fifty years. Team Policing, Community Policing and Problem Oriented Policing have all been in vogue only to evolve into a new name or new set of practices. Some of the changes in policing have occurred in response to external pressures and threats to the organization and practice of policing; others have come from inside the police. Smart Policing is the latest conceptualization of policing in North America. This presentation will argue that Smart Policing is more likely than other iterations to endure, in part because it is founded on evidence based approaches and integrates translational criminology into practices, strategies and styles of law enforcement. Examples of the integration of research into policing will be identified and discussed. Free Lecture. No registration necessary. The year 2015 marks the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta - a document rooted firmly in the politics of medieval England, but which has had political, legal and social repercussions across the globe over the past eight centuries. In this instalment of the Dr. John Archer Library's 2015-16 Beyond the Book lecture series, co-sponsored by the University of Saskatchewan College of Law, Dr. Carolyn Harris will discuss how this remarkable document from the 13th century remains relevant to - and indeed has helped shape - our world into the 21st century. Dr. Harris is the author of Magna Carta and Its Gifts to Canada: Democracy, Law, and Human Rights (Dundurn Press, 2015). She teaches history at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies and received her PhD in European history from Queen's University in 2012. Chubby Checker and the Wildcats with Roberta Nichol (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 26, 2015 - September 26, 2015

Chubby Checker was the unrivaled king of the rock & roll dance craze. Athough most of the dances his records promoted — the Pony, "the Fly," and the Hucklebuck, to cite just three — have long since faded into obscurity, his most famous hit, "The Twist," remains the yardstick against which all subsequent dance floor phenomena are measured. Born Ernest Evans on October 3, 1941, in Spring Gulley, South Carolina, he worked in a local poultry shop while in high school, and while on the job often entertained customers by singing and cracking jokes. His workplace antics helped win an audition with the local Cameo-Parkway label, who signed the fledgling singer in 1959. At the suggestion of no less than Dick Clark's wife, the portly youth was re-christened Chubby Checker, the name a sly reference to Fats Domino.
Checker's first single, "The Class," showcased his skills as an impressionist; while the record became a minor novelty hit, none of its immediate follow-ups were successful. In 1960, however, he recorded "The Twist," a cover of a 1958 Hank Ballard & the Midnighters B-side. Checker's rendition de-emphasized the original's overtly sexual overtones, focusing instead on the song's happy-go-lucky charms. The single rocketed to #1 during the autumn of 1960, remaining on the charts for four months. Some time after it dropped off, it slowly returned to prominence, and in late 1961 it hit #1 again, the only record ever to enjoy two stays at the top more than a year apart. After "The Twist" first made Checker a superstar, he returned to the top in 1961 with "Do the Pony". That same year, he also reached the Top Ten with "Let's Twist Again," which assured the dance's passage from novelty to institution.
Songs: “The Twist”, “The Fly”, “Let’s Twist”, “Let’s Twist Again”, “The Class”, and “Do The Pony”.
Roberta Nichol – A real people person with a deep affection for her prairie roots, Roberta has been entertaining audiences with her music for over 45 years. Whether she’s singing her own eclectic material, contemporary folk, country swing, or the “oldies”, Roberta’s diverse style promises something for everyone.

UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 25, 2015 - September 25, 2015

Named after a British unemployment benefit form, pop-reggae band UB40 was formed in a welfare line in 1978, and their multiracial lineup reflected the working-class community their members came from. The band consolidated its street credibility with political topics appealing to dissatisfied youth and got a boost from fans of the waning 2-Tone ska revival movement. Brothers Robin (lead guitar) and Ali Campbell (guitar, lead vocals) formed the centerpiece of the group, which also included bassist Earl Falconer, keyboardist Mickey Virtue, saxophonist Brian Travers, drummer Jim Brown, percussionist Norman Hassan and toaster Terence "Astro" Wilson. The band purchased its first instruments with compensation money Ali Campbell received after a bar fight, even though few of the members knew how to play them.
But by the end of the year, the group was invited to tour with the Pretenders. Their "Food for Thought" single reached the U.K. Top Ten in 1980, beginning a long streak of chart appearances. Signing Off and Present Arms were big sellers in Britain and addressed the political issues of the day in songs like "One in Ten", a Top Ten hit blasting Margaret Thatcher for the country's unemployment rate. Released in 1983, Labour of Love, an album of reggae cover songs, gave the group its first chart album in America and first number one U.K. hit with Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine."
Songs: “Red Red Wine”, “Falling In Love With You”, “Kingston Town”, “I Got You Babe” and “The Way You Do The Things You Do”.

Mock Vote Then Go Vote (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 23, 2015 - September 23, 2015

Help make 2015 the last unfair election in Canada. Our first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system is producing phony majorities because mathematically, it is designed for two parties. Proportional representation (PR) is designed for countries like Canada with many parties. With PR, the number of seats won reflects the number of votes received. Join us for a mock vote comparing FPTP and PR with an "Ask Us/Tell Us" session and then go vote as a better informed citizen. Presented by the Saskatchewan Chapter of Fair Vote Canada-committed to civic education and electoral reform.

Philosophy Café: Can we choose our identities? (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: September 21, 2015 - September 21, 2015

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The series runs each fall and winter semester. We invite you to our first discussion in the Philosophy Café Fall series presented by Dr. Eldon Soifer who is a Professor Philosophy at the U of R. Can we choose our identities? From Caitlyn Jenner to Rachel Dolezal (whose parents claimed she is a white woman passing as black) to "One Armed Jack" and other "transabled" individuals, there have been a number of recent items in the media involving people who have wanted to change how they are perceived by others. Cases such as these highlight issues about the extent to which it is, or should be, open to individuals to choose their own identities. This discussion will explore such questions, including considering under what circumstances, if any, it would be morally wrong for a person to adopt a particular identity. This event is free and everyone is welcome to attend!

Rethinking the Economics of Co-operatives (University of Regina)

Featuring Carlo Borzaga Professor, Department of Economics, University of Trento, Italy President, European Research Institute on Co-operative and Social Enterprises Co-operatives continue to grow and thrive in many countries, despite the dire predictions of traditional economics, which heralds their disappearance or at least marginalization. This short-sighted approach depends on at least three limitations: 1) the assumption that only the market and authority can co-ordinate economic agents; 2) the importance given to the motivation of self-interest in economic transactions; and 3) a concept of entrepreneurial action reduced to the profit motive. Randy Bachman (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 9, 2015 - September 9, 2015

Few artists can claim to have made a bigger impact on popular music than Randy Bachman, widely regarded as the “architect of Canadian rock ‘n’ roll.” One of the Great White North’s favorite musical sons, Bachman co-founded iconic bands, The Guess Who and Bachman‐Turner Overdrive, earning over 120 gold and platinum albums/singles around the world as a performer and producer, and amassing more than 40 million in record sales. He’s also no stranger to garnering coveted #1 spots on radio playlists, having done so in over 20 countries.
His accomplishments haven’t gone unrecognized, of course. In addition to his induction into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville, Bachman has the distinction of being the only one of his countrymen to be inducted twice into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, most recently alongside his fellow original Bachman‐Turner Overdrive members in 2014. A recipient of the Order of Canada, Bachman’s overwhelming international influence and popularity was acknowledged in 2011 by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in the form of the Global Impact Award.
Despite all of his success, Bachman was determined to move forward musically, and in order to do so he had to look backward and revisit the glorious days of the ‘60s British blues boom. Using the amplified blues‐rock of Cream, Led Zeppelin and The Who as his blueprints, Bachman and a newly formed power trio envisioned his new album, Heavy Blues, as an explosive, raw reinterpretation of that music with a distorted, modern edge.
Songs: “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet”, “American Woman”, “Let it Ride", “Taking Care of Business”, “Looking Out for #1”, “No Sugar Tonight”, “These Eyes”.

Queen - It’s a Kinda Magic (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: September 5, 2015 - September 5, 2015

Tribute – Queen - It's a Kinda Magic, is the theatrical creation of the very best of Queen live in concert, which has captured the imagination of Queen fans everywhere.

The passion and excitement of Freddie Mercury, the amazing guitar solos of Brian May, and all those unbelievable harmonies from the whole band. Delivered with modern day sound and lighting, it creates the best of the 70's/80's rock era, taking audiences back in time.
Queen songs are anthems, the band legendary and Freddie Mercury iconic! Queen - It's a Kinda Magic transcends the void of reality and make-believe. The audience forgets that this is not a real Queen concert, giving the cast two to three standing ovations every night and waiting in the foyers after the show to meet the cast and relive their own Queen stories.
Now it's your turn to experience the phenomena of Queen - It's a Kinda Magic!
