Bettye LaVette (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: May 29, 2015 - May 29, 2015

Bettye LaVette is one of the greatest soul singers in American music history, possessed of an incredibly expressive voice that one moment will exude a formidable level of strength and intensity and the next will appear vulnerable, reflective, reeking of heartbreak.
Preferring to fulfill the role of a song interpreter rather than attempt to write her own material, Bettye has a near mystical ability to get inside a song’s lyric, melodic line and harmonic implications. In the process, she invariably makes anything she covers her own. She listened endlessly to master song interpreters such as Sarah Vaughan and Frank Sinatra, to the intricacies of phrasing and timbre manipulation that are part of the sonic art of any truly great vocalist.
In a career that spans over 50 years and includes more than 20 albums, Bettye has won numerous R & B and blues awards and received two Grammy nominations for “Best Contemporary Blues Album” for The Scene of the Crime and Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook. She starred for six years in the smash Broadway hit musical Bubbling Brown Sugar. In January, 2009, Bettye and Jon Bon Jovi performed "A Change Is Gonna Come" for President Barack Obama at the kick-off Inaugural Celebratory concert, We Are One. Later that year she shared the stage with Sir Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr at Radio City Music Hall for David Lynch's Change Begins Within benefit concert. Bettye’s 2012 autobiography, "A Woman Like Me", was co-written with David Ritz, author of books on R&B legends Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye. It has been described as 'engrossing', 'riveting', 'hair-raising' and ‘only suitable for the over 18s’.
Songs: “My Man – He’s a Lovin’ Man”, “He Made a Woman Out of Me”, “Right in the Middle”.
Tickets on sale February 18 for Players Club Members, February 20 for general public.

Lovin' Spoonful (Casino Regina)

Category: Live Music
Dates: May 22, 2015 - May 22, 2015

In 1965, two rockers from Long Island, Steve Boone and Joe Butler, teamed up with two folkies from Greenwich Village, John Sebastian and Zal Yanovsky, to form the Lovin' Spoonful and go on to record and perform some of the songs that would dominate the charts and establish them among the greats of the mid-sixties era.
Combining the best of folk music and rock and roll, with a touch of country thrown in, they gave us such hits as “Do You Believe in Magic”, “You Didn't Have to be So Nice” and the anthem for a hot July evening, “Summer in the City”.
As 1969 approached, the skies were darkening in Good Time Music land and sensing opportunities in individual endeavors the three remaining members went their separate ways with a promise to not let the spark go out. In 1991, a long awaited settlement with their record company inspired Joe and Steve to contact Jerry and start up the Lovin' Spoonful again. The year 2000, marked a milestone for the band when they were officially inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. The Spoonful has been performing their songs around the world for over 45 years.
Members: Steve Boone & Joe Butler (original members), Jerry Yester (since 1967), Mike Arturi & Phil Smith

Seminar by Dr. Cory Butz: Introducing Darwinian Networks (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 14, 2015 - May 14, 2015

Abstract: We suggest Darwinian networks (DNs) as a biological view of Bayesian networks (BNs). DNs adapt a handful of well-known concepts in biology into a single framework that is surprisingly simple, yet remarkably robust. With respect to modelling, on one hand, DNs not only represent BNs, but also faithfully represent the testing of independencies in a more straightforward fashion. On the other hand, with respect to three exact inference algorithms in BNs, DNs simplify each of them, while unifying all of them. DNs can determine good elimination orderings using the same platform as used for modelling and inference. More information: https://www.facebook.com/events/394654027408048/

Why Food Security is Determined by Elites: Price Spikes and Vietnam's Rice Policy (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 13, 2015 - May 13, 2015

Presented by Dr. Murray Fulton, Professor, Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy and Director, Centre for the Study of Co-operatives Sharp food price rises, such as the one in rice in 2007, are a key element of food security - they are a source of social unrest and can cause malnutrition, hunger and death. These price spikes are often made worse by export restrictions imposed by exporting countries. In Vietnam, a political elite appears to have used export restrictions as a way of maintaining power and capturing significant economic benefits. Given this political element, food security will remain an elusive goal, since the changes required to alter the political economy of rice policy in countries like Vietnam occur only if other much more fundamental economic and political changes take place. Changing Politics? Breaking down Alberta's provincial election and what it means for the rest of Canada (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: May 7, 2015 - May 7, 2015

Presented by Daniel Béland, JSGS Professor and Canada Research Chair in Public Policy; Rose Olfert, JSGS Professor Emerita; and John Courtney, JSGS Policy Fellow Moderated by Michael Atkinson, JSGS Executive Director In Alberta, the Progressive Conservatives (PC) have been in power without interruption since 1971. At the most recent provincial election, back in 2012, polls predicted the victory of the opposition Wildrose Party but, in the end, the PC unexpectedly won enough seats to form yet another majority government. Calling the election earlier than scheduled, new PC Premier Jim Prentice expected to crush a recently weakened Wildrose Party but polls rapidly suggested a high level of dissatisfaction among the public and much stronger support than expected for the NDP. In other words, Alberta's 2015 electoral campaign is much more exciting and much less predictable than anticipated. This election also takes place in a context of fiscal and economic challenges related to lower oil prices and the volatile nature of a resource economy, among other factors. Taking place a couple of days after the election, this panel explores its historical, political and policy implications, for Alberta, Saskatchewan and the rest of Canada. Challenges in Responding to Harassment Allegations (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 28, 2015 - April 28, 2015

Featuring Bettyann Cox and Ross Macnab, moderated by Robert Hawkins Courts, universities, professional sports teams and workplace employers have increasingly been called upon to deal with allegations of sexual misconduct allegedly perpetrated by students, athletes and members of the general public. Much media coverage has been given to these incidents, and two polarizing view points have emerged in how these incidents should be handled - one focusing on the rights of the accused to be treated fairly, and the other focusing on the right of the victim. These two approaches often clash and cause confusion as the general public tries to sort out what should happen in these types of situations. Join in the discussion on the legal framework governing harassment, the implications of communication technology, common mistakes and problems that occur in dealing with harassment complaints and how employers and employee groups should respond to allegations of harassment. Silence across an organizational field: Discourse analysis of business school histories before and after the global financial crisis (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 24, 2015 - April 24, 2015

Presented by Dr. Shelagh Campbell of the Faculty of Business Administration Summary This paper examines the organization narratives of business schools prior to and following the 2007-2008 economic crises. Using website representations of school histories, missions, and key communications with stakeholders, the paper explores the discourses surrounding legitimacy of the business school both within the academy and beyond its walls in the broader economic context. Distinct discourses of research prominence, accreditation, internationalization and job market readiness emerge that indicate schools carry on in a "business as usual" mode despite the prominent upheaval in global and regional financial markets. Furthermore, despite an increased emphasis on business ethics in the curriculum, there is a notable absence of a discourse of integrity and ethical behaviour among the histories of the subject schools. This silence invites reflection on the role of the business school in preparing the next generation of business leaders and on the balance between intra-academy and extra-academy legitimization.

Film Screening - The Kayapo (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 17, 2015 - April 17, 2015

This film focuses on the conflicts and determination of a group of people trying to survive and maintain their ethnic identity in the face of almost overpowering odds. The film contrasts the reactions of two groups of Kayapo to outside influence. The Kapot have opposed contact and resisted both non-indigenous Brazilian settlers and gold miners. The Gorotire, by contrast, were invaded by gold miners who strip-mined their land and polluted their rivers. The miners paid the Gorotire very little for the destruction until 1985 when the Gorotire forced the miners to raise the commission by 5% when 200 warriors seized the airstrip. This commission amounts to two million dollars per year for the tribe and the tribe is learning to cope with the money, both with the problems it brings and the power it gives. They have trained several of their number to deal effectively with the outside world on behalf of the rest of the tribe and they now run a plane (and hire a pilot) to patrol their land against intruders. Beyond the Book - TO:The North Korean People (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 13, 2015 - April 13, 2015

"TO: The North Korean People" is a presentation focused on how creating direct contact with North Koreans is changing the minds of the people. The Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) team will actually give the audience an opportunity to send a message to North Koreans who have escaped, and they are partnering with radio broadcasting partners to get these messages into North Korea in a way the regime cannot block. The theme focuses on how new flows of information and media are helping North Koreans understand what's really going on in the outside world, which then inspires them to live in freedom--and how we can add to this international conversation. Liberty in North Korea is a non-profit educational organization based in Torrence, California. Their nomad teams travel across North America every year giving hundreds of presentations to universities, high schools, churches and community groups. LiNK helps fund escape and resettlement programs for North Korean refugees living clandestinely in China. More information: http://www.libertyinnorthkorea.org/tours/

Art Roulette and Visual Arts Open House (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: April 9, 2015 - April 9, 2015

The University of Regina campus and Regina community are invited to drop in to the Department of Visual Arts annual Open House and Art Roulette reception and fundraising event. The Department of Visual Arts opens the doors to the public each year for an Open House to showcase the works of our students in a range of media. Studios will be open, students will be demonstrating techniques, and students' art will be on view in all our studios and classroom on all three floors. Entry is free, and this year tickets are on sale for $30.00, which will guarantee walking home with an original work of art donated by an undergraduate or graduate student. How it works: you buy a ticket, you come to the event, tickets will be drawn from a drum, and when your ticket is called you get to pick a work of art off the wall (or floor, or plinth!). You may designate a proxy on your behalf if you are unable to attend the event. Open House: 5 - 7 p.m. Art Roulette at 5th Parallel Gallery: 7 - 10 p.m. following Open House
