Colloquium - The great actor now upon the stage: performance & identity at the impeachment of the Earl of Strafford (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 27, 2015 - March 27, 2015

The Department of History would like to invite everyone to our third and final Colloquium of the Winter 2015 term. "The great actor now upon the stage: performance and identity at the impeachment of the Earl of Strafford" Presented by: Dr. Gregory Koabel, History Department, Campion College The 1641 impeachment of the Earl of Strafford dominated the early months of the Long Parliament. In the proceedings Strafford's accusers employed "constructive treason" - a legal innovation which sought to prove guilt through a cumulative reading of Strafford's actions rather than pointing to a single act which could be proven treasonous. This talk explores the implications of this decision. The trial became a stage upon which Strafford's consciously constructed performance battled with interpretations of his actions and behaviour to uncover the authentic Strafford. As a result the trial provides an excellent opportunity to examine performance and identity in the world of early modern political culture. Everyone is welcome to attend! Refreshments to follow in the third floor lounge, Ad Hum 349.

2015 Stapleford Lecture - The Fierce Urgency of Now: Global education as a gateway to creating critically informed, motivated and globally competent citizens (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 26, 2015 - March 26, 2015

The Faculty of Arts is pleased to present the 2015 Stapleford Lecture The Fierce Urgency of Now: Global education as a gateway to creating critically informed, motivated and globally competent citizens Michael O'Sullivan Faculty of Education, Brock University In this, era of glabalization, in which the borders of the nation-state are ever more porous, the daunting challenges that face humanity are increasingly global in scope and therefore require global solutions. This has significant implications for the professional practice of K to 12 teachers, teacher-educators, and curriculum developers. Students need to be prepared to successfully confront the complex 21st century challenges that they will soon inherit as young adults. In order to move humanity towards a resolution of problems that can no longer be avoided, schools need to prepare students to become critically informed, motivated, globally competent citizens with social problem skills and a willingness to challenge widespread complacency and resulting government inaction. For this to happen 21st century citizens must internalize the values, master the skills, acquire the knowledge and experience the sense of empowerment associated with global citizenship education. All are welcome - No admission fee - Refreshments to follow For further information see: http://www.uregina.ca/arts/public-lectures/stapleford-lecture.html

Public Screening of Mask You Live In (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 26, 2015 - March 26, 2015

Pressured by the media, their peer groups, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become "real" men. Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the "boy crisis" and tactics to combat it. The Mask You Live In ultimately illustrates how we, as a society, can do better to raise a healthier generation of boys and young men. More information: http://manupagainstviolence.ca/

The King Stag (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 25, 2015 - March 25, 2015

Adapting freely from Carlo Gozzi's Commedia del'arte classic, The King Stag, director Joey Tremblay and the Theatre Department at the University of Regina will present a spectacular, clown-filled version of the play filled with the all the pageantry and comic gags (lazzi) of the original - with some impish irreverence and mischievous rebellion thrown in. This update of the 18th-century fairy tale should appeal to the fanciful at heart as well as the young in age. The show's design takes its inspiration from steam punk - a subgenre of science fiction, fantasy literature and art that features steam-powered machinery in a setting inspired by industrialized Western civilization during the 19th century. We are using all the tricks that our fabulous proscenium stage offers - the traps and the ropes!

A Journal of Travel and Encounters in French America (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 23, 2015 - March 23, 2015

What could motivate an English-speaking Mormon American to spend his life in Quebec, following the paths of voyageurs and coureurs de bois, fur trade workers, Catholic missionaries, explorers and settlers and searchers for gold and oil? What interest drives him to seek out the French-speakers of America and track them to the most hidden corners? As they travel along with our guest speaker, the audience will gain some answers to these questions and discover an America with a distinctly French accent. Dean Louder retired in 2003, after having been a professor at Laval University's Department of Geography. He is a member of the Ordre des francophones d'Amérique and continues to travel America on the trail of America's Francophones. More information: http://www.institutfrancais.uregina.ca

Public Screening of Mask You Live In (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 23, 2015 - March 23, 2015

Category: Other Event

Presented by Dr. Katherine Fierlbeck, McCulloch Professor, Political Science, Dalhousie University With a shrinking economy, aging demographics, and an exodus of skilled workers, the province of Nova Scotia faces exceptional challenges in attempting to develop a responsive and sustainable health care system. Yet it is difficult to extricate policy dilemmas from political strategies, especially when real policy flexibility contracts as public irascibility expands. What are the specific obstacles facing Nova Scotia's health care system, and how has the province responded to them? Why has it decided upon its current strategy of reform, and how successful in this endeavour will it be? An Evening of French Documentaries (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 18, 2015 - March 18, 2015

7 p.m. Fransas Quoi?! - 60 min. Fransas quoi?! takes us across Saskatchewan's canola fields to provide a picture of a community that is fighting against assimilation. Fransaskois is the name that the province's French-speakers have adopted to identify themselves. And while many people are unaware of the community's existence, French has been spoken throughout Saskatchewan for a very long time. Today it is still proudly celebrated by those who have the red fleur de lys emblazoned on their heart. 8 p.m. Les héritiers du club, Renée Blanchar (90 min.) Produced by Maryse Chapdelaine at the NFB's Canadian Francophonie Studio - Acadie with executive producer Dominic Desjardins With citizens increasingly feeling abandoned by politicians, can artists play a role in society? Rooted firmly in the present while drawing lessons from the past, Les héritiers du club reimagines life in a community through a series of collective initiatives. Incorporating various personal stories, the film sketches a complex shared history and explores how memories are passed on. Les héritiers du club blends the Direct Cinema tradition with Super 8 filming as it chronicles a moving quest to open the door to new ways of being together. Colloquium -‘Farewell to Cotia’: The English Folk Revival, the ‘Pit Elegy’ and the Nationalization of British Coal, 1947-70 (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 6, 2015 - March 6, 2015

The Department of History would like to invite everyone to our second Colloquium of the Winter 2015 term. "'Farewell to Cotia': The English Folk Revival, the 'Pit Elegy' and the Nationalization of British Coal, 1947-70." Presented by: Dr. Julia Mitchell (University College London) By the early 1960s, the coal industry in Britain - nationalized in 1947 - had been all but dismantled, leaving New Leftist aspirations for a socialist democracy in ruins. As miners' hopes for nationalization faltered in line with a de-industrializing economy, the social and political fallout was expressed compellingly through the English folk revival (c.1945-1970). Everyone is welcome to attend! Refreshments to follow in the third floor lounge, Ad Hum 349.

Regina’s P3 referendum: A vote hijacked by a war of numbers from nowhere (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 6, 2015 - March 6, 2015

Public Private Partnerships (P3a) are relatively recent innovations in the public infrastructure development space in Canada. This paper explores the strange circumstances surrounding a referendum held in Regina Saskatchewan, on City Hall's prior decision to pursue a P3 model of building, financing and operating a municipal infrastructure project. What started off as an instance of vibrant public engagement, ultimately forcing the referendum, turned into a war of numbers from nowhere; a contest between numbers without verifiable origins due to the practice of shielding P3 calculative technologies. Using Actor-Network Theory we focus on the enlistment by P3 proponents of numbers from the Value for Money chart contained in a report produced by experts, Deloitte, for the City. The expert calculations supporting these numbers were severely redacted in reports released to the public. Despite the lack of verifiable substance these numbers were enlisted by P3 proponents and came to speak volumes during the referendum, effectively drowning out all other discourse. This was aided by the public option proponents who challenged those numbers and added similarly unverifiable numbers of their own, turning the referendum into a war of expert-produced numbers without substance, reducing the referendum question to "Whose numbers do you trust?" Dead Man Walking: The Journey Continues (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: March 5, 2015 - March 5, 2015

Sister Helen Prejean, CSJ, will deliver the 35th annual Nash Memorial Lecture entitled Dead Man Walking: The Journey Continues. Sister Helen Prejean has been instrumental in sparking national dialogue in the United States on the death penalty and helping to shape the Catholic Church's newly vigorous opposition to state executions. She travels around the world giving talks about her ministry. She considers herself a southern storyteller. Since 1984, Sister Helen has divided her time between educating citizens about the death penalty and counseling individual death row prisoners. Her first book, Dead Man Walking: An Eyewitness Account of the Death Penalty in the United States, documents her experience as a spiritual advisor to death row inmate Patrick Sonnier at Angola. Sister Prejean has accompanied six men to their deaths. In doing so, she began to suspect that some of those executed were not guilty. This realization inspired her second book, The Death of Innocents: An Eyewitness Account of Wrongful Executions, which was released by Random House in December of 2004. Book sales and signing will follow the lecture. More information: http://www.campioncollege.ca/events
