Philosophy Café - The Mind and the Natural World: A Brief History of Thinking by Dylan Ludwig (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 23, 2015 - February 23, 2015

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The Café runs each Fall and Winter semester. "The Mind and the Natural World: A Brief History of Thinking" Presented By: Dylan Ludwig, Philosophy and Classics Department, University of Regina The talk takes a brief look at the conceptual history of our thinking about the mind and its place in the natural world. This historical survey makes explicit a long standing and widely held, but mistaken, conceptual assumption that has truly halted progress in the field. Given this deeply rooted conceptual mistake, we can begin to assess the state of current research on the nature of consciousness to see if there are theories or methods that will avoid these sorts of mistaken assumptions, and in turn hopefully identify areas where there is real conceptual innovation in the field, something that is truly needed in the philosophy of mind. The Philosophy Café is open to the general public and all are welcome to attend.

Executive Compensation Policies and Income Inequality (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: February 3, 2015 - February 3, 2015

Presented by Dr. Dionne Pohler, Assistant Professor at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy Many explanations have been proposed for the sources of rising income inequality in North America. Some scholars suggest that much of it stems from earnings inequality due to disproportionate gains at the top; executive compensation systems that tie pay to performance, particularly through stock options, are susceptible to rent-seeking behavior. Contradicting this perspective, there is evidence to suggest that options have also been common during periods of lower executive compensation and inequality. In this study, we provide empirical data to support the idea that rising inequality within an organization correlates to changes in executive compensation policies after an initial public offering. Payment methods and well-being of physicians: Dissecting the impact of alternative payment plans on equity and distress of practitioners (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 30, 2015 - January 30, 2015

Presented Dr. Juan-Nicolás Peña-Sánchez , post-doctoral fellow, Saskatchewan Heath Research Foundation and Crohn's and Colitis Canada The fee-for-service (FFS) payment system has been criticized for affecting quality of care, contributing to the fragmentation of health care, and for rising costs of health care systems. Alternative payment plans (APP) have been introduced as options to the traditional FFS. Despite the link between payment methods and behaviour of physicians that has been established, there is a lack of evidence about the impact of payment systems on well-being of physicians, specifically on their perception of professional equity and daily distress. This lecture will present a study conducted among physicians practicing in the Saskatoon Health Region which aimed to explore the effects of APP on perceptions of their professional equity and daily distress. Philosophy Café - 'What is it like to be you?' by Dr. Anna Mudde (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 26, 2015 - January 26, 2015

The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The Café runs each Fall and Winter semester. "What is it like to be you?" Presented by: Dr. Anna Mudde Dr. Mudde is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Campion College at the U of R In this talk I consider the social and political implications of the disagreements we often have with one another about what there is (in the world): disagreements that raise the question "what is it like to be you?" This is a philosophical relative of questions about perception of colours: do you and I see the same thing when we see red? By considering everyday examples, in this talk, I suggest that political or practical disagreements can and should lead us to ask a similar form of question -- not primarily about how our eyes and sensory systems work, but about our "ontological presuppositions," our underlying, implicit, commitments about what there is and what it is like. The Philosophy Café is free and open to the general public, all are welcome to attend! More information: http://www.uregina.ca/arts/philosophy-classics/

Out in the Cold - A Film by Sarah Abbott (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 23, 2015 - January 23, 2015

On a night so cold it hurts to breathe, Soft as Snow and Cold as Ice meet Thomas, a young man in a drunken stupor who has been dumped on the outskirts of town. When Thomas suggests the two men should walk back to the city with him, Soft as Snow and Cold as Ice persuade him to stay the night. Each man has a different motive: Cold as Ice wants Thomas to die and join them; Soft as Snow wants Thomas to survive the night and return to the city to tell people their story. Out In The Cold is a poignant and oftentimes humorous drama, rich in metaphor while exploring themes of loss, memory and disregard. The script was inspired by the freezing deaths of several First Nations men in Saskatoon, allegedly as a result of a "starlight tour," the non-sanctioned police practice of taking individuals to an isolated edge of town and abandoning them to the elements. In 2001, Amnesty International included the freezing deaths in their report of international human rights abuses. This is a public viewing; everyone is welcome to attend! Fine Arts Presentation Series (University of Regina)

Category: Other Event
Dates: January 23, 2015 - January 23, 2015

Messing with Making and Meaning in Current Craft Media Ruth Chambers, Professor, Visual Arts Drawing from a range of current artworks in which craft media skills and processes are employed to realize ideas, this talk will look at strategies employed by some makers in which material and process-based virtuosity are concurrently highly invested and disavowed. What might be read as conflict or ambiguity about craft will be discussed and a deliberate approach to making, to consciously re-skilling, to incorporating, for example, idiosyncracity, awkwardness and irreverence - and the same time, savoir-faire - as a way of re-locating and re-claiming the handmade object, particularly in relation to commodity culture. Bio Ruth Chambers is an artist and Professor of Visual Arts. During her recent sabbatical she worked on small compositions of fragile, handmade porcelain objects in an attempt to address ideas of beauty, consumption, and temporality through the tradition of the still life.
