2015 Forward Together Lecture - Dr. Wade Davis (University of Regina)
Category: Other EventDates: January 27, 2015 - January 27, 2015
The Presidents of the University of Regina, Campion College, Luther College and First Nations University of Canada present the 7th annual Forward Together Lecture: "The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in a Modern World" Every culture is a unique answer to a fundamental question: What does it mean to be human and alive? In this presentation, Dr. Wade Davis will lead us on a thrilling journey through Polynesia, the Amazon, the Andes, Australia, Nepal and Borneo in a celebration of the wisdom of the world's indigenous cultures. Described by Dr. David Suzuki as "a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet and passionate defender of all of life's diversity," Dr. Davis is a Harvard-educated ethnographer, writer, photographer and filmmaker. He served as Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society (NGS) between 1999 and 2003, and has been named by the NGS as one of the Explorers of the Millennium. Dr. Davis is the author of close to 20 books, and his photographs have appeared in more than 100 books, magazines, journals and newspapers, including National Geographic and Time. He is currently a professor of anthropology at the University of British Columbia.

Category: Other EventDates: January 26, 2015 - January 26, 2015
The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The Café runs each Fall and Winter semester. "What is it like to be you?" Presented by: Dr. Anna Mudde Dr. Mudde is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Campion College at the U of R In this talk I consider the social and political implications of the disagreements we often have with one another about what there is (in the world): disagreements that raise the question "what is it like to be you?" This is a philosophical relative of questions about perception of colours: do you and I see the same thing when we see red? By considering everyday examples, in this talk, I suggest that political or practical disagreements can and should lead us to ask a similar form of question -- not primarily about how our eyes and sensory systems work, but about our "ontological presuppositions," our underlying, implicit, commitments about what there is and what it is like. The Philosophy Café is free and open to the general public, all are welcome to attend! More information: http://www.uregina.ca/arts/philosophy-classics/

Category: Other EventDates: January 23, 2015 - January 23, 2015
On a night so cold it hurts to breathe, Soft as Snow and Cold as Ice meet Thomas, a young man in a drunken stupor who has been dumped on the outskirts of town. When Thomas suggests the two men should walk back to the city with him, Soft as Snow and Cold as Ice persuade him to stay the night. Each man has a different motive: Cold as Ice wants Thomas to die and join them; Soft as Snow wants Thomas to survive the night and return to the city to tell people their story. Out In The Cold is a poignant and oftentimes humorous drama, rich in metaphor while exploring themes of loss, memory and disregard. The script was inspired by the freezing deaths of several First Nations men in Saskatoon, allegedly as a result of a "starlight tour," the non-sanctioned police practice of taking individuals to an isolated edge of town and abandoning them to the elements. In 2001, Amnesty International included the freezing deaths in their report of international human rights abuses. This is a public viewing; everyone is welcome to attend! Category: Other EventDates: January 23, 2015 - January 23, 2015
Messing with Making and Meaning in Current Craft Media Ruth Chambers, Professor, Visual Arts Drawing from a range of current artworks in which craft media skills and processes are employed to realize ideas, this talk will look at strategies employed by some makers in which material and process-based virtuosity are concurrently highly invested and disavowed. What might be read as conflict or ambiguity about craft will be discussed and a deliberate approach to making, to consciously re-skilling, to incorporating, for example, idiosyncracity, awkwardness and irreverence - and the same time, savoir-faire - as a way of re-locating and re-claiming the handmade object, particularly in relation to commodity culture. Bio Ruth Chambers is an artist and Professor of Visual Arts. During her recent sabbatical she worked on small compositions of fragile, handmade porcelain objects in an attempt to address ideas of beauty, consumption, and temporality through the tradition of the still life.

Integration of Older Adults in Society: Is It Really Beneficial? Neena Chappell, PhD, FRSC, FCAHS Canada Research Chair in Social Gerontology, University of Victoria Dr. Chappell will discuss social integration for older adults in terms of connection and participation, empowerment, and community. She will relate these concepts to individual participation as well as to broader concerns in society. Research suggests that interaction with others is good for the health and quality of life of older adults and perhaps most types of interaction can be positive, leaving a wide spectrum for individual choices. Although there is limited research on interventions, several examples appear beneficial such as the World Health Organization's Age-Friendly Cities and Communities idea. This presentation will discuss the benefits of social integration as well as ideas on how older adults can become more socially engaged. More information: http://www2.uregina.ca/cah/

Category: Other EventDates: January 9, 2015 - January 9, 2015
Documentary Produced by Rites of Passage, SOAR, Imagica Pictures At the age of 24, Noel Starblanket was one of the youngest First Nations chiefs in North America. At the age of 29, he became Chief of all Canadian Indians when he was elected president of the National Indian Brotherhood [now referred to as The Assembly of First Nations]. Outspoken, rebellious and sometimes outrageous, he was the subject of the 1973 National Film Board of Canada production titled simply, Starblanket. Now, three and a half decades later, he shares with humor and emotion, his own healing journey as he finds peace in returning to the teachings of the Elders, a greater appreciation of life through loss, and renewed hope for the future with the emerging Seventh Generation, his journey becomes the viewer's as well. Through the universal language of image, music, and emotion, Starblanket: A Spirit Journey brings to light in a very personal way, the ancient teachings and the extraordinary wisdom of the First Nations people, while offering a much needed message for our time. Category: Other EventDates: January 9, 2015 - January 9, 2015
The Department of History would like to invite everyone to the first Colloquium of Winter 2015! "Douglas versus Manning: The Political and Religious Battle over Medicare in Postwar Canada" Presented by: Dr. Gregory Marchildon This presentation purpose will explore the competing models of universal medicare designed and implemented by the Douglas government of Saskatchewan and the Manning government of Alberta from the late 1940s until the early 1960s. This historical inquiry addresses not only the political ideologies of Tommy Douglas and Ernest Manning but also the nature of their religious beliefs, and the historical connection between religion and political ideology. This allows for a richer evaluation of not only the differences between the policy objectives of each but also the deeper values motivating each to shape the broader direction of the welfare state in Canada. Refreshments to follow in AH 349 (Faculty of Arts Lounge) All are welcome to attend!

Category: Other EventDates: January 9, 2015 - January 9, 2015
Installation opening ceremony and feast. "A blanket where the story of each piece is as important to its construction as the wood and screws that hold it." The blanket is a universal symbol of protection. For many of us, it identifies who we are and where we're from - we wear them in ceremony and give them as gifts. Blankets protect our young and comfort our elders. Inspired by a woven blanket, we have created a large scale art installation, made out of hundreds of items reclaimed from Residential Schools, churches, government buildings and traditional and cultural structures including Friendship Centres, band offices, treatment centres and universities, from across Canada. The Witness Blanket stands as a national monument to recognise the atrocities of the Indian Residential School era, honour the children, and symbolise ongoing reconciliation. Over the past 18 months our project team has traveled all over the country collecting pieces from every province and territory. These "Gathering Trips" have allowed us to meet thousands of Canadians from every walk of life and gather 894 Pieces of History along the way. Please join us in ceremony of the opening of this important and impactful installation. Everyone is welcome to attend. Screening of Metis Rose: a portrait of Elder Rose Fleury with special guest filmmaker Marjorie Beaucage Elder Rose's 86 years of living are anchored in the core values she learned from her great grandmother who raised her. This video, in her own voice, is a pilgrimage into her own life as she puts things in order before she goes. An exploration of her ancestral origins in Tourond's Coulee, where the Battle of Fish Creek occurred in 1885, led to her life's work of genealogy research. As she says, "I had to know…." Raising 29 children (9 of her own and 20 foster children) without indoor plumbing is a feat in itself! Through all this, Rose worked for the Métis all her life and was part of creating the first Métis local and involved in numerous women's organizations to better the lives of the Métis people. As an Elder, she continues her work with schools and communities across the land, leaving her legacy. Sit and have tea with Rose as she reflects on her life.

Category: Other EventDates: November 28, 2014 - November 28, 2014
When Canadians think of Saskatchewan--if they think of it at all--they think "flat and boring," or even "flyover country," something to traverse on their way to Vancouver or Toronto. Saskatchewan is the birthplace of socialism, Medicare, and public funding for the arts--all essential to Canada's national identity. Please join us next Friday in the Fifth Parallel Gallery in Riddell Centre to celebrate the release of Overlooking Saskatchewan: Minding the Gap, edited by Randal Rogers (Fine Arts) and Christine Ramsay (Film & Media Studies). In this book, twenty writers articulate the challenges and the power of this "in-between" identity and highlight how our province's citizens lead the way in culture and innovation. Drop on by for a short chat and take in the latest exhibition by U of R student artists! ** Wine and light refreshments will be served. All are welcome. **

A Talk by John Foster (University of Regina)
Category: Other EventDates: November 27, 2014 - November 27, 2014
John Foster, petroleum economist, will explore the connection between petroleum and the world's hot spots - a connection that is rarely elaborated by governments or media. Looking at specific hot spots such as Ukraine, Syria and Iran, he will probe geopolitics and resource rivalries, explaining the importance of chessboard thinking and extensive digging. Included will be illustrations from the world today and from his experiences with BP, Petro-Canada, World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. John Foster, a Canadian expert on the world oil scene, has worked in more than thirty countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America - with the World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and two oil companies (BP and Petro-Canada). Born in London England, he graduated from Cambridge University in economics and law, and served in the Royal Navy (Suez). We would like to thank the Canadian International Council (South Saskatchewan) for sponsoring this event.

(University of Regina)
Category: Other EventDates: November 26, 2014 - November 26, 2014
Presented by Dr. Sebastian Sewerin, Postdoctoral Visiting Scholar at the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy With global governance of climate mitigation being in deep flux, the importance of state-led efforts - on either the national, regional or local level - to curb greenhouse gas emissions is being rediscovered by political scientists. Yet, despite a growing body of research and the production of numerous country-rankings, advances in our understanding of differences between countries are hampered by the limited comparability of findings. But how can we assess countries' capability to design effective policies? And how can we explain differences in their policy performance? This presentation introduces the conceptual and methodological challenges of comparing countries' efforts. Dr. Sewerin will also give an overview of his research on comparative environmental politics and will present his current research projects. Category: Other EventDates: November 24, 2014 - November 24, 2014
The Philosophy Café is an open exchange of philosophical ideas led by a University of Regina Philosophy Professor or a Graduate Student. The Café runs each Fall and Winter semester. The Department of Philosophy & Classics is proud to present the third and final talk in our Philosophy Café Fall 2014 Schedule. "Demonstrative Reference and Speaker Intentions" Presented By: Dr. Ryan Doran Dr. Doran is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the U of R. Demonstrative Expressions (in English this, that, these, and those) are claimed to be universal to all human languages and among the first words that children learn, but their analysis has remained elusive for philosophers and linguists. As demonstratives are used to refer to objects in the immediate surroundings, philosophers have been particularly interested in the relationship between demonstratives and thought; however, explaining how a demonstrative comes to be about a particular object has proven difficult. In this presentation I explore the theoretical issues surrounding demonstrative reference and present an analysis in which the use of demonstrative expressions is governed by rational norms of conversation observed by speakers.
